The Next Web

The Next Web
It's good to be reminded from time to time about where the web is really headed. This article focuses on Tim Berners-Lee as the architect of the (proposed) semantic web. The project is nothing nearly like the one-man show depicted in the article, but it's nonetheless clear that Berners-Lee has a vision and is working toward it. More...

Email Newsletters Pick Up Where Websites Leave Off

Email Newsletters Pick Up Where Websites Leave Off
Validated. Jakob Nielsen likes email newsletters and says that "users have highly emotional reactions to newsletters... you have an ongoing relationship with them." So much so that many people won't unsubscribe even when they stop reading the newsletter. More...

Get Off the Web

Get Off the Web

Fee based, subscription based, no deep linking, no ad blocking... let me clear about my poisition on this: if you aren't willing to share, you should keep your content to yourself and leave the web to those willing to use it as designed. More...

When The Web Starts Thinking For Itself

When The Web Starts Thinking For Itself
The point of this article is to sound a note of caution regarding the expected capabilities of the emerging "thinking" web. It gives an average background of the role of resource description formats (RDF) and ontologies in the storage and creation of online knowledge. More...

Synchronous Learning On the Web

Synchronous Learning On the Web
Audio and video conferences have never seemed to me to be a very efficient means of providing online learning. But synchronous conferencing has its place in education, albeit not the place where we see it most often. By Stephen Downes. More...

Why the web has challenged scientists’ authority – and why they need to adapt

Why the web has challenged scientists’ authority – and why they need to adapt
Andrew J. Hoffman, The Conversation, 2018/03/01
I'm not sure I agree with the premise of this article. Andrew J. Hoffman suggests that " Many Americans are ignoring the conclusions of scientists on a variety of issues including climate change and natural selection." The suggestion is based on a Pew study arguing that while Americans value scientific research, they often disagree on politicized issues such as evolution or climate change. More...

Smart Makerspace: A Web Platform Implementation

Smart Makerspace: A Web Platform Implementation
Gabriel Licks, Adriano Teixeira, Kris Luyten, International Journal of Emerging Technologies in Learning, 2018/02/27
The idea of a 'smart makerspace' is that it is a space for making things (software, designs, products, whatever) supported with a type of web assistant or guide to help people get past the initial challenge of making things with new technology. This was the idea behind AutoDesk's Smart Makerspace (more) and also Harvard's Guerilla Makerspace. More...

Google Condemns the Archival Web

Google Condemns the Archival Web
Doc Searls, dsearls, 2018/02/20
Doc Searls writes, "The archival Web—the one you see through the protocol HTTP—will soon be condemned, cordoned off behind Google's police tape, labeled "insecure" on every current Chrome browser... Every legacy website, nearly all of which were created with no malice, commit no fraud and distribute no malware, will become haunted houses: still there, but too scary for most people to visit." It's a problem for me because getting a certificate is neither simple nor cheap. More...
