Professor argues GRE hurts STEM, women and minorities

eCampus NewsBy . The Graduate Record Examinations, a standardized test developed more than 60 years ago and a requirement at most U.S. grad schools, is not a good predictor of a student’s ultimate success, and is the primary barrier holding back women and minority students, said Casey Miller, a professor of physics at USF and co-author of “A Test that Fails,” published last month in the journal Nature. Grand challenges for mathematics education

http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/castingoutnines-45.pngBy Robert Talbert. Greetings from Indianapolis, my old stomping grounds, where I’m attending the 2014 American Society for Engineering Education Conference. I’m speaking tomorrow morning on the flipped classroom in calculus and its implications for engineering education, and I’m also the Mathematics Division chair this year and so I have some plate-spinning functions to perform. Are Higher Education Humanities Majors Really Declining?

With the rise of the 21st century knowledge economy, many politicians and experts have been saying something similar about humanities education. They say all the best jobs will be in the STEM fields — science, technology, engineering and math — and encourage students not to major in the humanities.
So there’s a kind of plague spreading in humanities departments everywhere, at least according to popular media reports. With fewer and fewer English and literature majors, people are getting ready to declare the humanities dead or dying, even though it’s far from dead. More...

Is the GRE Too Influential?
