Oh, the Humanities! Disciplines Survived, Even Thrived, Despite Recession

subscribe todayBy Max Lewontin. For humanities departments that are still struggling with the lingering effects of the 2008 recession, it appears no news is the best news.
That’s one of the chief conclusions of a report released on Monday by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The report stems from a survey of the state of the humanities across 13 disciplines...
The new survey results build on a previous one conducted during the 2007-8 academic year. This time around, the academy added five new disciplines to its look at the humanities: classical studies, communication, folklore, musicology, and philosophy. More...

Thoughts on hiring committees and humanities PhDs

Last week I began to respond to Timothy Pettipiece’s op-ed piece in the current issue of University Affairs, noting the dearth of new tenure-track faculty positions being created at the moment, and the underlying financial factors which have created that situation. As I opined elsewhere, in a response to Ira Basen’s CBC Radio documentary entitled “Class Struggle”, nothing would give me greater pleasure than to hire 100 new faculty members tomorrow; but that would require an additional $10M in my base budget, and that simply isn’t going to happen unless tuition fees are completely deregulated nationwide or the provincial government finds new pots of money. Do you really know what Liberal Arts are?

ACA's first European Policy Seminar after the summer break is on Liberal Arts (and Sciences) education in Europe. It will provide an introduction into the philosophy and the main features of Liberal Arts education, amongst them the college system, undergraduate research and (small) size. The seminar will also present and analyse varied examples of successful Liberal Arts programmes in different European countries. Its aim is to also to clarify the concept of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the core idea behind such education.
Liberal Arts education originated from Europe and it was based on the seven liberal arts – artes liberales – which comprised those focusing on language (grammar, rhetoric and logic) and those with mathematical elements (arithmetic, geometry, astronomy and theory of music). The idea behind artes liberales was that education should, above all, lead to a well-rounded and – free - person. Thus the seven liberal arts were the foundation for any further training and specialisation. More...

My colleague calls this technique writing for collaboration.
Some questions:

  • What is the proper place for learning analytics in the liberal arts context?
  • How can we utilize evidence to improve student learning? Read more...

Humanities vs. STEM, Redux

HomeBy Charlie Tyson. A new analysis from the American Academy of Arts & Sciences confirms a common fear: humanities majors and STEM majors dwell in separate academic silos. STEM majors, especially engineering students, take few humanities courses, the data show. And humanities majors take even fewer STEM courses. Read more...

Games, Games, Games!

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/CRW.jpgBy Lee Skallerup Bessette. Last week, I attended HILT (Humanities Intensive Learning and Teaching), which is a digital humanities week-long training in the vein of DHSI. I took Anastasia Salter’s course, Games in the Humanities Classroom. Anastasia is brilliant and wonderful and you should definitely buy her new What is Your Quest? You can see the Prezi of our class’ presentation to the group, plus check out #hilt2014 on Twitter for all the goodness that was last week. Read more...
