Ontario lightens postsecondary costs for part-time students

http://beta.images.theglobeandmail.com/media/www/images/flag/gam-masthead.pngBy James Bradshaw. Ontario is going to make it less expensive for students to go to university or college part-time, and easier for those with student loans to pay their tuition.
Training, Colleges and Universities Minister Brad Duguid on Thursday announced a package of changes to the ways postsecondary institutions can charge tuition. The move drew cheers from student leaders but upset universities, many of which will have to make do with less revenue. More...

On a Crash Course for Reinvention

collegeBy Bob Kerrey. Thirty years ago-- with the Cold War ending and the rise of the Internet just beginning -- the demand for a post-secondary degree increased. This was the collective result of millions of individuals making a rational decision that their understanding of the world and their economic opportunities in that world would increase if they earned a college degree.
Since that time, the global pursuit of an elite education -- often culminating with a high quality American degree -- has not slowed. But, there is a new and growing concern about the cost of that degree. More...

#NASPA14 Introduces Members' Choice Sessions

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/student_affairs_and_technology_blog_header.jpgBy Eric Stoller. It's no secret that conferences often need themes as vehicles for marketing and focus. However, themes can be limiting and the ever-present "applicability to conference theme" checkbox for reviewers is a hurdle that some submissions can never get past. For their 2014 annual conference, NASPA has decided to add a new type of session to the mix. Dubbed "Members' Choice," these sessions are similar in nature to some of the unsessions from years past. Having lead some of the unsession slots the last few years, I am appreciative that NASPA has maintained some spots for those topics that don't necessarily "fit" the usual "mold" but are still "critical conversations student affairs professionals should be having." Notes from NEASC

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/confessions_of_a_community_college_dean_blog_header.jpg?itok=rd4sr8khBy Matt Reed. Yesterday I gave a brief discussion at the NEASC conference in Boston, thinking it would be about the potential impact of federal performance funding for community colleges.  In passing, I made the point made here earlier this week that right now, we measure ‘performance’ using proxies, such as graduation or degree completion, but that using competencies offered the possibility of getting closer to measuring actual learning.  I considered it peripheral to the main argument, if interesting in itself. Signs of revolt mount as French universities reject secular charter

Go to the Globe and Mail homepageBy Ingrid Peritz. Quebec’s largest university is panning the province’s secular charter as a useless measure, adding to signs of a growing revolt against the Parti Québécois’s controversial bill.
The French-language University of Montreal is challenging the very basis of the government’s argument for its legislation. When the minister responsible for the charter, Bernard Drainville, introduced it in September, he said it was meant to address a “crisis” over religious accommodations that had festered for years and created tensions in Quebec.
