e-Literate Top 20 Posts For 2014

By Phil Hill. I typically don’t write year-end reviews or top 10 (or 20) lists, but I need to work on our consulting company finances. At this point, any distraction seems more enjoyable than working in QuickBooks. More...

The Administration's College Rating System: How It Looks On Campus

By . It's late afternoon. Most classes at Randolph College are done for the day but students have begun gathering in the lobby of the elegant, century-old main hall.
A student taps on a piano while he and four classmates wait for their philosophy professor. After-hours sessions like these are a key feature of this small, private liberal arts college in Lynchburg, Va.
It markets itself nationally as a "unique, nurturing community of learners," well worth the $45,000 a year in tuition, room and board. More...

Anthropologists Urged to Focus on Police, Inequality

HomeThe president of the American Anthropological Association on Friday issued a statement calling on anthropologists to act in response to the issue of police killings of unarmed black men.

Accreditors' Sanctions and Quality

HomeBy Michael Stratford. Accrediting agencies, on average, have not been more likely to sanction colleges with poor student outcomes than they are higher-performing institutions, according to an analysis by a Congressional watchdog. But the largest of them -- and the ones that accredit most public and nonprofit colleges -- are, the report notes. A Government Accountability Office report released Monday took particular aim at national accreditors, saying there was no significant difference in how those accrediting agencies responded to colleges with weak and strong student outcomes. http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/Ticker%20revised%20round%2045.gifBy . Three days before Christmas, the Government Accountability Office put big lumps of coal in the stockings of accreditors and the U.S. Department of Education. The federal office released a report criticizing accrediting agencies’ efforts to oversee academic quality at colleges, and faulting the Education Department for not increasing its own scrutiny of colleges that are under accreditors’ sanctions. An update on the specifications grading process

http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/castingoutnines-45.pngBy Robert Talbert. The last time I posted, I made a public commitment that I would be moving away from traditional points-based grading systems and implementing specifications grading in the upcoming semester. It’s 20 days later, and after a week of in-depth trial and error (mostly error, it feels like), I have working prototypes of specs grading-centered versions of both courses I’ll be teaching. With a few modifications (that’s your cue for suggestions, readers) these are basically ready to “ship”. More...

http://postmediacalgaryherald2.files.wordpress.com/2014/10/logo-header.pngBy Trevor Howell. Post-secondary student leaders fear a controversial tool known as market modification will become the new normal after the Alberta government granted near blanket approval for 10 schools to hike tuition for a select number of programs by up to 56 per cent starting next fall.
“These tuition increases allow institutions to enhance quality and make these specific programs more responsive to student needs,” Don Scott, minister of innovation and advanced education, said in a statement. More...

Not a Full Picture: Evaluating Tribal College Success Using Mainstream Measures

By . On November 26, 2014, an article by Sarah Butrymowicz titled "Tribal colleges give poor return on more than $100 million a year in federal money" appeared in The Hechinger Report. From our perspective, the title should have been "Tribal Colleges give remarkable return on a meager $100 million a year in federal funding." In spite of a dire need for funding, Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) are preserving and building upon Indigenous culture and educating Native people. More...
