By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. The ME-Learning Manifesto
Stephen Lahanas used to frequent the E-learning Leaders Yahoo! group and was one of the first people in my field of vision to begin seriously questioning the role of the learning management system (LMS); here I am responding to some of his concerns in 2003. Then I sort of lost track of him, but it's really good to see his name surface in this paper (even it it has 'Proprietary Material ' stamped all through it). The 'M' in E-Learning described in this paper is intended to pick up where traditional e-learning falls short. More...

Spock's Risky Take On Trust, Privacy, and Identity Management Online
By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Spock's Risky Take On Trust, Privacy, and Identity Management Online
When I first tried Spock the site was so slow that I couldn't learn anything. They've apparently fixed that problem, as Catherone Howell reports, but additional problems remain. "It's not especially useful, and it could even be dangerous, for a company to try and create a public expectation that 'identity management' equates to an individual actively 'controlling' all the personal information that is available about him/her on the web... I'd say we've already got other, better mechanisms to do the things that Spock says it's offering users". More...

dominKnow
By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. dominKnow
NRC policy prohibits the providing of mobile devices to researchers (they are reserved for management and business development officers) so I cannot pursue the links sent to me regarding mobile learning. But it's no surprise to see products like this aimed directly at the iPhone market. Some of the ad content is ridiculous (who thought it would be a good idea to use the word 'sizzle'?) but the use of a blog is a good idea. There's a portal - but you have to sign in. I expect that, were I able to try this stuff out, I would be frustrated by the access controls imposed by the hardware. More...
OLAT (Online Learning And Training): Open Source LMS
By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. OLAT (Online Learning And Training): Open Source LMS
Another open source learning management system (LMS), this one called OLAT. The post also contains a link to UNICEF's comprehensive list of open source LMSs. Anyhow, I tried out OLAT (there's a demo on the site). It's fast and mostly intuitive to operate. But as I tried to do different things, I found myself clicking clicking clicking. This isn't unique to OLAT, it seems to be something about LMSs in general. But especially those that work on the file and folder model. Clicking clicking clicking. More...

Grazr 2.0 Beta - Drag'n'Drop Feed Management
By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Grazr 2.0 Beta - Drag'n'Drop Feed Management
Dran-and-drop is good, especially when it works, and even more when it does a useful task, like feed management. Tony Hirst describes Grazr's new drag-and-drop feed management system to create a widget that displays feed contents. The really interesting stuff comes in once we talk about feed autodiscovery.
