Place of humanities in education being questioned

By Karen Seidman. As countries compete for the most engineers and scientists, and the greatest technological and medical breakthroughs, and as funding to universities is being cut, the need for humanities in higher education is being questioned.
At a forum at McGill University on Tuesday debating the relevance of humanities education, about 40 academics and students who gathered in the arts building lamented the economic realities of the world today that pressures students to take programs that lead directly to jobs.
Yet enrolment in McGill’s humanities programs — which typically include literature, history, languages, the arts, philosophy and religion — has been steady, or increasing slightly, said Maggie Kilgour, who organized the event. More...

Training Historians and the Dual Degree

subscribe todayBy Merlin Chowkwanyun and Karen M. Tani. When historians gathered for their annual meeting in January, the future of the discipline itself was on the agenda. Amid the talk about the relevance of historical scholarship and the precarious employment prospects for history Ph.D.’s were promising proposals aimed at broadening the graduate curriculum and rewarding nonacademic career paths. But one potential solution seemed to be largely overlooked: the dual-degree program.
Graduate students in a dual-degree program simultaneously earn a history Ph.D. and a second degree, often a master’s from a professional school. An aspiring historian planning to write on the history of urban planning, for example, could earn degrees in both fields. More...

No Laughing Matter: President’s Quip About Art History Pricks Some Ears

subscribe todayBy Beckie Supiano. Art history caught some unwelcome attention from President Obama in a speech on Thursday emphasizing the need for job training. To reinforce his point that manufacturing jobs pay off, Mr. Obama said that young people who train for them could outearn art-history majors.
The remark drew laughter from the president’s audience in Wisconsin. But some in higher education felt slighted, even though Mr. Obama quickly added in his speech that there is “nothing wrong with an art-history degree” (trying to ward off “a bunch of emails”). More...

What I Learned From the Liberal Arts

By Chad Orzel. As a follow-up to yesterday’s post about liberal education and the failure modes thereof, I thought I should try to do something constructive and make suggestions regarding how you might go about a “poetry for physicists” kind of thing. After all, one of the things I find intensely frustrating about a lot of “crisis in ____” discussions is the lack of specific suggestions, so throwing out a “here’s a problem, good luck with that” post would be suboptimal behavior on my part. This required some reflection on the question of just what I got out of my “liberal arts” classes back in the day– what ideas and skills I picked up that I find useful today. More...

Timid About Fair Use?

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Colleen Flaherty. Visual arts professionals, including art historians, let real and perceived fears about copyright law get in the way of their work, finds a new report from the College Art Association. And while the fundamentally visual nature of their discipline raises particular concerns among scholars of art, artists, editors and museum curators, experts say their fears are shared across academe -- although some disciplines have worked to develop codes to help scholars navigate the murky waters of fair use.
