Free college for the rich

USATODAYBy Duncan Black. The best thing about the Obama administration proposal to provide free community college is the universality of the proposal. For too long, even liberal proposals for government programs intended to disproportionately help lower income individuals have been saddled with various income requirements, adding uncertainty and complexity to both qualifying for and administering these programs. Helping the Poor in Education: The Power of a Simple Nudge

New York TimesBy . There are enormous inequalities in education in the United States. Leo Mirani, Quartz, 2014/12/22

We need to be careful about which part of the new technology-enabled on-demand economy we are cheering for. Uber, for example, or AirBNB appear to be tech-enabled, but they're not, really. More...

Addressing learning inequalities in the digital era

Education in all European countries is unequal. PISA scores show that across Europe an individual’s socio-economic status predicts their education outcomes. In some European countries this correlation is stronger, in some it is weaker, but increasing equality in education is a key priority. What is the role of digital learning in this? It can be a force for equality, but it can be a force for inequality. More...

Inequality: Global Problem, Global Solutions?

France Stratégie - Commissariat à la stratégie et à la prospectiveBetter than official statements or opinion polls, the global success of Thomas Piketty’s latest book, Capital in the Twenty-First Century, is indicative of rising global discontent over the distribution of income. Inequality and more specifically the ascent of the super-rich are back on the radar screen. In many countries, they have become social and political issues that no party or government can afford to neglect. More...

Is inequality good or bad for growth?

By Brian Keeley. All these arguments have some merit, and indeed few would disagree with the idea that some level of inequality is necessary in a modern economy. But over the past couple of years, the bigger proposition – that inequality is good, or at least not bad, for growth – has come under increasing fire, including from the IMF, the OECD and even Standard & Poor’s. And now comes new research from the OECD indicating that “income inequality has curbed economic growth significantly”. More...
