More attention should be paid to university students' mental health
By Rob Whitley. The holidays were a welcome break for students after the end-of-term stresses of December. But January can also be an overwhelming month, as many return from the familiarity of home to the harsh realities of university life.
That said, sympathy for students has been in short supply lately. Recent news has not shown them in a positive light. This includes the cancellation of free yoga classes at the University of Ottawa due to concerns about “cultural appropriation,” and the refusal of Ryerson Students’ Union to recognize a men’s issues group on the grounds of “safety.” These give the impression that students are over-sensitive and mollycoddled babies.
