A year after Quebec’s universities had the rug pulled out from under them when unexpected budget cuts left holes in their budgets, they are hoping the new fiscal year is going to bring the desperately needed funding increases the Parti Québécois government had promised.
Higher Education Minister Pierre Duchesne has pledged an increase of $262 million for 2014-15, but McGill University is convinced that only about $140 million will be coming, while Liberal higher education critic Pierre Arcand said the government seems to be offering only “conditional” increases that don’t give universities the flexibility they need to manage their institutions.
