U.S. Department of State and Coursera Partner to Offer Enhanced Learning Opportunities

http://www.state.gov/images/2010/usdos-logo-seal.pngToday, the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announces a partnership with online education provider Coursera to expand learning opportunities worldwide through massive open online courses (MOOCs), incorporating discussions facilitated by alumni of U.S. government exchange programs, such as the Fulbright program, and U.S. Embassy staff familiar with the course materials. The State Department and Coursera will work together to engage young people and promote interest in U.S. higher education.

The partnership is part of the State Department’s “MOOC Camp” initiative, which hosts facilitated discussions around MOOCs at U.S. Embassies, Consulates, American Spaces, and other public spaces around the world. As participants in these programs, international students will also learn about opportunities to study in the United States through EducationUSA, a global network of student advising centers supported by the Department of State.

As part of its Global Learning Hubs program, Coursera is providing training materials and additional support for course facilitators. U.S. Embassies and American Spaces in more than 30 countries—including South Korea, China, India, Tunisia, Georgia, Bolivia, and Finland—will host discussions around Coursera courses on a variety of subjects.
