MOOCs – Past, present and future

By Hamish Macleod and Geoff Gould.The University of Edinburgh has a reputation for innovation and so being part of one of the first massive online open courses, or MOOCs, was a logical step for us. One of the most striking things about the university’s pilot MOOC was how it demonstrated the sheer appetite for online learning. Not really knowing what to expect, we were astonished with the level of enrolments, which exceeded 300,000. We had almost 90% of applicants coming from outside of the UK, so it is truly a worldwide phenomenon. Read more...
