The Final Countdown Has Started : 50 days until the IAU GMA 6

The Programme of the IAU GMA 6 is now final. Debates promise to be exciting and very stimulating!
Focusing on Social Innovation: Challenges and Perspectives for Higher Education, this 6th edition of the GMA will invite participants to discuss whether and how associations of higher education institutions and their members can have an impact on the development of a more sustainable society and can contribute to find new and innovative solutions for today's and tomorrow's challenges.

Learning Together for Change (Conference)

Learning Together for Change: Advancing Education For All (EFA) through Higher Education is a conference organised by the Association of Swedish Higher Education (SUHF) as a contribution to IAU's important work and involvement in the UNESCO-led EFA movement.
The aim of the conference is to gather representatives from different sectors, including academia, to discuss how higher education and research can be engaged in the process of achieving the right to education for all.
Structured around four different themes (sustainability and change; learning, technology and globalisation; rights, equality and gender; and quality), the conference will take place at the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology in Arusha, Tanzania, from 27 to 29 April 2015.
Deadline for registration is 20 March 2015.

A dirty international deal that could harm education

The Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) has been under negotiation now in various forms since 2005 and multinational companies are desperate to see governments conclude discussions and sign the agreement in the coming months. Resisting ERA: Why not just say no?

On 22 October 2014, I published an opinion piece in the Higher Education Supplement of The Australian under the title ‘Two Rounds Enough: ERA Does More Harm than Good’. In that article, I argued that ‘after two rounds of Excellence in Research Australia (ERA) I believe the evidence is now in that the ERA is doing more harm than good. It is driving intensified managerialism, creating invidious status hierarchies between and within disciplines, and undermining collegiality. Potentially, it may also threaten academic freedom as managers seek to direct staff more and more where to publish, and even not to publish.’ More...

‘How could Australia not think of investing heavily in science? This is just insanity.’
