A Weird but True Fact about Textbook Publishers and OER

By Michael Feldstein. As I was perusing David Kernohan’s notes on Larry Lessig’s keynote at the OpenEd conference, one statement leapt out at me:
Could the department of labour require that new education content commissioned ($100m) be CC-BY? There was a clause (124) that suggested that the government should check that no commercial content should exist in these spaces. Was argued down. But we were “Not important” enough to be defeated. WCET14 Student Panel: What do students think of online education?

By Phil Hill. Yesterday at the WCET14 conference in Portland I had the opportunity along with Pat James to moderate a student panel.[1] I have been trying to encourage conference organizers to include more opportunities to let students speak for themselves – becoming real people with real stories rather than nameless aggregations of assumptions. Hack Education Weekly News: Feminist Hacker Barbie

https://s3.amazonaws.com/hackedu/audreywatters_75.jpgBy . The non-profit ECMC Group is buying 56 Corinthian College campuses and will reportedly keep the WyoTech and Everest campuses (and brands) intact. The organization, which services student loans – do not let that “non-profit” label fool you that its some sort of noble organization here – will pay $24 million for the campuses. Great insight and great questions from “Dean Dad.”
Pluralsight has paid $75 million for Smarterer, a company that offers multiple choice quizzes to assess employees’ skills. But there is no ed-tech bubble. More...

From "Open" to Justice #OpenCon2014

https://s3.amazonaws.com/hackedu/audreywatters_75.jpgBy . Here are the transcript and slides from the talk I gave this morning at OpenCon 2014. I was a little nervous as to how well this would be received -- nothing like challenging the meaning of a word that makes up the title of the conference. More...

Men Explain Technology to Me: On Gender, Ed-Tech, and the Refusal to Be Silent

https://s3.amazonaws.com/hackedu/audreywatters_75.jpgBy . Here are the notes and the slides from what is (I hope) my last talk of 2014. I gave this this evening to University of Mary Washington, and then turned around and presented it again (online) to Alec Couros and Katia Hildebrandt's class EC&I 831.
This is (I think) the last public talk I will give this year. It has been the most difficult one to prepare. More...

A ‘starter’ bibliography on MOOCs

http://www.tonybates.ca/wp-content/uploads/MIT-MOOC-panel-548x305.jpgBy Tony Bates. For the increasing number of students doing Masters’ dissertations or Ph.D’s on MOOCs I have collected together for convenience all the references made in my chapter on MOOCs for my open textbook, ‘Teaching in a Digital World.’ However, there are many other publications – this cannot be considered a comprehensive list. Also note the date of this blog post: anything published after this will not be here, unless you let me know about it. Read more...

Why MOOCs are only part of the answer for higher education

http://www.tonybates.ca/wp-content/uploads/MIT-MOOC-panel-548x305.jpgBy Tony Bates. OK, except for the next post, which will be a list of publications on MOOCs for graduate students studying the topic, and a scenario for a ‘good’ MOOC, this will be my last post on MOOCs for a while.
This is the conclusion to my chapter on MOOCs for my open textbook, ‘Teaching in a Digital Age‘. This whole chapter is now published here. There will be a scenario illustrating what I define as a ‘good’ MOOC to go with this conclusion. Read more...

This is the last part of my chapter on MOOCs for my online open textbook, Teaching in a Digital Age. In a series of prior posts, I have looked at the strengths and weaknesses of MOOCs. Here I summarise this section and look at why MOOCs have gained so much attention. Read more...

This is the fifth in a series of posts from my open textbook, Teaching in a Digital Age. I have already published four extracts from the book on MOOCs:

the key design features of MOOCs (‘What is a MOOC?’)
the differences between cMOOCs and xMOOCs
the strengths and weaknesses of MOOCs, Part 1, focusing on:
their contribution to open and free education
the audience that MOOCs mainly serve
persistence and commitment of MOOC participants
the strengths and weakness of MOOCs, Part 2, focusing on:
        learning
        assessment

In this post, I examine their value for branding, and their costs. Read more...
