In 2013, two-way goods and services trade reached $70.8 billion ($66.5 billion in goods and $4.3 billion trade in services), making Japan Australia’s second-largest trading partner. Japan is Australia’s second-largest export destination (15.5% of total exports) and third-largest source of imports (6%). Seven public-private partnerships, established under the EU's new research funding programme Horizon 2020, are being launched today. They represent a total investment of €19.5 billion into research and innovation over the next seven years, where the EU contribution of €7.3 billion will unlock a €12.2 billion investment from the private sector and the Member States. Together with four more public-public partnerships with Member States, they form an Innovative Investment Package representing an investment into Europe's future of over €22 billion.
These partnerships work in a number of fields crucial for Europe's economic growth, creation of jobs, industrial competitiveness, and well-being of citizens. The first round of calls is worth a total of €1.13 billion in public funding, which will be complemented by a comparable amount from the private partners. One in four university students in Vienna are foreigners, according to a new study, which also warns that the Austrian capital risks losing out to other European cities as it does too little to attract international students.
The study, which was conducted by the Joanneum Research non-profit organization, compared Vienna to Zurich, Amsterdam, Munich, and Copenhagen. It found that whilst Switzerland was able to rely solely on the excellent reputation of its universities to attract international students, other countries had introduced specific measures to make their universities appealing. Foreign universities are not eager to enter India, despite having tie-ups with their Indian counterparts, because of the stringent policy regime. In the current scenario, while a foreign educational institution can enter the country as a company (under the provisions of the Companies Act), no top international university has opened its campus in India.
Conditions
To enter India, a foreign university has to be among the top 400, should apply under not-for-profit legal entities, and should be in existence for at least 20 years and accredited by an agency of that country or in the absence of its accreditation in that country, by an internationally accepted system of accreditation.
