The need for an ASEAN University

By Roger Y Chao Jr. With the ASEAN Community set to be established in December 2015, there is a need to revisit the failed 1992 ASEAN initiative to establish an ASEAN University. Its failure should not be attributed to lack of political will among ASEAN member states, but rather to an immature regionalisation process. Read more...

How to boost your university up the rankings

By Yves Gingras. The recent publication by Thomson Reuters of the list of Highly Cited Researchers and their institutions provides data much more interesting than simply knowing who are the most cited and which institutions hire them. By providing data on secondary affiliations, the list inadvertently confirms the traffic in institutional affiliations used to boost institutions’ places in world university rankings. Read more...

‘Organised anarchy’ – The enduring paradigm of university management

By Damtew Teferra. Pressured by relentless demands for accountability, dogged by serious legal, financial and administrative concerns, guided by legitimate reasons to remove ‘academic dead wood’, misguided by naïve and simplistic views as well as driven by sinister motives, higher education managements and leaderships in many countries are fast assuming characters of ‘unadulterated’ corporate and business models. What counts for academic productivity in research universities?

By Philip G Altbach. Publication in high status refereed journals has become a major criterion of academic success in the competitive environment of global higher education. Misconceptions about (the end of) internationalisation

By Hans de Wit. In 2011, I wrote two provocative essays. The first one, together with Uwe Brandenburg, had the provocative title “The End of Internationalisation”. We spoke of our concerns about an increasingly instrumentalist approach, a devaluation of the meaning of internationalisation and a lack of innovation, and warned that we should no longer take things for granted and that internationalisation needed to be reinvented for the future. In international student recruitment, questions about integrity persist

By Karin Fischer, The Chronicle of Higher Education. The agent debate is dead. Long live the integrity debate. For some time now, the discussion about whether American colleges could use commission-based agents when recruiting students abroad has been the hottest of hot-button issues in international admissions, with each camp staking out fiercely partisan positions. An Erasmus-style exchange programme for the Arab world gained ground at the second Arab-Euro higher education conference held in Jordan last month. “It received substantial support from people who are at universities and also contribute to policy-making in the region,” said Michael Gaebel, head of higher education policy at the European University Association.
