Many Business Leaders Doubt U.S. Colleges Prepare Students

More than one-third of business leaders agree with the statement "higher education institutions in this country are graduating students with the skills and competences that my business needs." About a third disagree with this statement -- including 17% who strongly disagree -- while another third is neutral. More...

The Bane and the Boon of For-Profit Colleges

The New York TimesBy . Marc Jerome, the executive vice president of Monroe College, says his business is being unfairly targeted as corrupt. The graduation rate at Monroe’s two New York campuses, in the Bronx and New Rochelle, is much higher than those at nearby community colleges. More than nine out of 10 of recent graduates tracked by the school in its latest survey either continued their education or found jobs; the survey was responded to by about 70 percent of graduating students, most of whom are low-income blacks and Latinos. And Monroe students have a lower default rate on student loans than the national average for public schools. More...

Arts degrees still important

http://www.therecord.com/Portals/15/Images/logo.pngBy Luisa D'Amato.  If you're studying history, English, anthropology or other arts subjects in university, chances are you're under a lot of pressure.
Parents, anxious about the precarious economy, are pushing their children to go into something that they think will lead to a meaningful job, and drama or medieval studies isn't what they had in mind.
This has serious consequences for universities across North America. Some departments are hemorrhaging students. At Wilfrid Laurier University, there were more than 1,000 English majors at Laurier in 2007. Now there are 445. Read more...

Returns from university degree unequal, study finds

http://beta.images.theglobeandmail.com/media/www/images/flag/gam-masthead.pngBy James Bradshaw. Most university graduates earn hundreds of thousands of dollars more over their careers than those with college or high-school credentials, according to a groundbreaking new study from Statistics Canada that tracked thousands of graduates for 20 years.
It also found top-earning men can make millions more than the best-paid women from age 35 to 54. The study – titled The Investment of a Lifetime? – tracks employment outcomes of a single cohort from 1991 to 2010 and shows that, for most, a university degree is a lucrative investment. Men with a bachelor’s degree earned $732,000 more than high-school graduates on average, while women with degrees made $448,000 more. Read more...

Suite...
