Leveraging philanthropy to improve financial inclusion

By Emilie Romon of the OECD Global Network of Foundations Working for Development (netFWD) and Sabrina Sidhu, from the Better Than Cash Alliance. What do a family foundation based in Canada, a semi-public foundation established in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and a corporate foundation from one of the world’s leading banks have in common? At first sight, not much beyond the fact that they are all charitable organisations. But a closer look tells us that they all dedicate time and resources to the same cause: financial inclusion. A Billion-Dollar Problem

subscribe todayBy Catharine Hill. Bloomberg Philanthropies announced this week a new effort to help talented low- and middle-income students enroll in and graduate from top-tier colleges and universities. While every intervention is welcome, this one assumes that a major problem is getting these students to apply to these institutions. In fact, the real problem is that colleges can accept more of these students only by reallocating resources to need-based financial aid. More...

According to the report, Philanthropy Education in the UK and Continental Europe: current provision, perceptions and opportunities, published by the Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy at Cass Business School, part of City University London, and the University of St Andrews, only five of the UK’s more than 160 higher education institutions offer dedicated philanthropy modules or courses at undergraduate or postgraduate level. Calling Visionary Philanthropists

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/confessions_of_a_community_college_dean_blog_header.jpgBy Matt Reed. I follow a fair number of academics on Twitter, and I’m consistently amazed at the travel schedules of those who don’t work at community colleges. They go to far more conferences than their community college colleagues do, even when the conferences are focused on teaching. Charity donations may become compulsory for all Chinese earners in sector overhaul

By Wu Nan. An NPC official vowed speedy action on a long-awaited charity bill that would make donations compulsory for every citizen.
Charities have received little attention at this year's parliamentary meetings, but Zhou Sen , the National People's Congress deputy for Henan province, vowed the central government "will take action on the legislation as soon as the two sessions are over".
Zhou wants it to be compulsory for citizens to donate part of their earnings to charity, "much like they must pay tax".
