African students in France protest planned fees increase

Petitions in France launched by African students’ associations have gathered more than 160,000 signatures against the French government’s plan to substantially raise university fees for foreign students from outside the European Union.
The French government says it is introducing the increases – from €170 (US$192) at present to €2,770 a year for a first, three-year degree, and from €240 to €3,700 for a masters or doctorate – from the 2019-20 academic year to make French universities more attractive by improving conditions and cutting bureaucracy for foreign students. Non-EU international students to pay much higher fees

By Jane Marshall. The French government is proposing to charge higher fees to foreign students from outside the European Union from the next university year, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe has announced. At present these students pay the same fees as French and EU students.
All students studying in a French university pay €170 (US$194) a year for a licence, the three-year first diploma equivalent to a bachelor degree. For a masters they pay €243 and for a doctorate €380. But in future a non-EU foreign student could be charged €2,770 (US$3,150) a year for a licence and €3,770 for the two more advanced degree courses. More...

French students accused of ranking levels of Jewishness

University students in France listed and ranked Jewish classmates according to their level of affiliation as part of a string of jokes online and on campus featuring anti-Semitic hate speech, an alleged victim of this behaviour said, reports the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
The medical student at Paris 13 University, a 19-year-old woman identified only as Rose, filed a complaint with police on 20 October, the Europe1 radio station reported. “Jew level 31, involved but capable of interacting with the goyim [or non-Jew],” one remark about a Jewish student read on a Facebook group belonging to Paris 13 students. “Jew level 75, category 4, will do anything for the community,” another said. Rose said the list was part of a series of incidents involving anti-Semitic hate speech that she had experienced in recent months. More...
