College to Address Copyright
College to Address Copyright
It won't be business as usual next year at Ithaca College as instructors will now have to obtain copyright clearance for materials traditionally shared - legally, they thought (probably correctly), under fair use - in student course packs. In addition to the cost, instructors will now have to spend a certain amount of time each year chasing down permissions for thirty or more items. More...
Is Copyright Piracy Morally Wrong or Merely Illegal? The Malum Prohibitum/Malum in Se Conundrum
Is Copyright Piracy Morally Wrong or Merely Illegal? The Malum Prohibitum/Malum in Se Conundrum
Rick Anderson, The Scholarly Kitchen, 2018/05/04
I view this post as a continuation of the lobbying effort to make unauthorized copying a moral issue rather than the straightforward legal issue that it is. The distinction being drawn here is between "mala prohibita (acts that are technically illegal but not morally wrong), and those considered mala in se (bad in themselves)" and Rick Anderson wants us to believe that "the whole malum prohibitum/malum in se argument really boils down to a question of moral philosophy." Compromise Copyright Bill in Works
As the summary suggests, "Opponents of Hollywood's drive to strengthen copyright law are mounting a new strategy: Require anything that has antipiracy technology built in to be clearly labeled and let consumers decide at the cash register." Which sounds fine by me, with one condition: the alternative option - technology without antipiracy technology built in - must also be available at the cash register. More...
