Making globalisation work for all and corporate responsibility

The world is facing a backlash against globalisation and growing public distrust has significantly impacted a series of national elections. This goes hand-in-hand with a pushback against investment treaties and trade agreements. More...

Cultural Globalization Is Not Americanization

Cultural Globalization Is Not Americanization
We don't hear a lot about world free trade and education. It could be because, as some suggest, "The whole idea of Transnational Ed has a not-so-vaguely colonialist dimension to it. In the context of the WTO and GATS, there will be net exporters and net importers of Higher Education services. It is not difficult to guess which nations will line up on which side of that divide." On the other hand, we have people like the author of this article who argues that world free trade will not have as a result the globalization of American culture. More...

At the start of the Centre for Global Higher Education (CGHE) conference on the new geopolitics of higher education, Michael Ignatieff argued the case for academic freedom, that universities are counter-authoritarian institutions, helping to open up societies. World-class systems rather than world-class universities

By Rajani Naidoo. Equality in higher education is a global issue, particularly in relation to the current fetish for global competition. There is a blind faith that competition in all areas of higher education will automatically lead to positive outcomes, including greater equality. However, in general different types of competition interact to create major barriers to enhancing equality. More...

Nations join emerging multi-polar global science system

By Yojana Sharma. Research-intensive universities now operate as a single network on a world scale with more and more nations entering this open system particularly built around science research. It is a global network “open to enter but intensively integrated inside”, says Simon Marginson, director of the Centre for Global Higher Education or CGHE. More...

Let Them Eat IT: The Myth of the Global Village as an Interactive Utopia

Let Them Eat IT: The Myth of the Global Village as an Interactive Utopia
I will be upfront and admit that I am a McLuhanist. Communications technology extends our senses and this to a large degree eliminates spatial boundaries, bringing communication (and hence information and empowerment) to humanity as a whole, not just to the world's elites. More...
