Le recours au temps partiel s’accentue avec l’âge. Il est alors plus fréquemment dû à des raisons personnelles et domestiques et à des problèmes de santé. Les ouvriers ont 5,6 fois plus de chances de déclarer être à temps partiel pour raison de santé que les cadres. La part du temps partiel « contraint » est la même chez les seniors que chez les plus jeunes.
Les 55-64 ans à temps partiel ont une durée habituelle hebdomadaire de travail plus courte que les 30-54 ans, 22,1 heures en moyenne. Un peu plus de 40 % d’entre eux occupent un emploi dont la durée est inférieure ou égale à un mi-temps (50 %). À temps complet, la durée habituelle hebdomadaire des seniors est la même que celle des plus jeunes (39,4 heures en moyenne). Leur durée annuelle effective est plus courte (1 654 heures en moyenne), ce qui s’explique, notamment, par des congés maladie plus longs. Les salariés les plus âgés sont les moins contraints aux horaires atypiques et ont davantage des horaires habituels réguliers.
Chez les seniors, les différences de durées du travail entre les hommes et les femmes et entre les cadres et les ouvriers sont identiques à celles observées aux âges intermédiaires. Cependant, des différences apparaissent entre les 55-59 ans et les 60-64 ans, le temps partiel étant notamment plus répandu et plus court chez les plus âgés.
