Neither private sector nor state want to pay for higher education – so who will?

The Guardian homeBy . The economy, business and industry benefit from a thriving university sector – yet tax-avoiding companies allow it to wither, says Peter Scott. Vince Cable appears to have fought to defend his budget at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills in last week's spending review. The bulk of BIS's budget is spending on higher and further education (though you could never tell from the department's title). Read more...

What students should take to uni

The Guardian homeBy . Space will be at a premium in halls, so think carefully about what your child needs to take. Once the excitement of getting into university has died down, there are more mundane things to consider, such as packing. Most student bedrooms are single rooms, so forget the plasma TV or cello, unless strictly necessary. Beyond the basics of bedding, towels and stationery, what else your child will require depends on whether their accommodation is self-catering or catered. Catered halls still often provide shared kitchens for students to prepare their own meals out of hours. Read more...

Staying Focused on Students

By Laurie M. Joyner.http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/alma_mater_blog_header.gif?itok=xupACp4T Weak economy. Shifting student demographics. Unstable enrollment. Budget deficits. Deferred maintenance. Leadership turnover. Risk management. Calls for accountability. Contested governance boundaries. Divergent agendas and expectations. Risky student behaviors. Crisis management. The above represents a snapshot of issues facing higher education leaders today. As I reflect on my first year as president of Wittenberg University, one of the continuing challenges has been maintaining the focus of the campus community and governing board on our collective role in systematically facilitating the core enterprise of student engagement, learning and success. Of Temps and Trainees

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/confessions_of_a_community_college_dean_blog_header.jpgBy Matt Reed. Now that a variation on the academic model has made its way throughout the economy, colleges are getting blamed for not preparing students for jobs. Yes, there’s always room for improvement, but at a basic level this is a misunderstanding. The jobs have changed. All of us -- higher ed, the broader public, political leadership -- are still coming to terms with that. Community colleges are part of a solution, but the issue is far, far larger. Read more...

U.S. University Admissions in the Good Old Days

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/the_world_view_blog_header.jpgBy Liz Reisberg. When I first worked in university admissions more than 30 years ago the word “marketing” was completely taboo. This is not to imply that admissions officers didn’t promote their institution. Admissions officers have been visiting high schools and making presentations in hotels for decades; it just wasn’t considered “marketing.” “Marketing” was considered much too commercial, too crass for higher education. Today, most admissions offices have a marketing plan, marketing strategy, marketing budget, and marketing staff.  Many hire public relations firms to define and distinguish their “brand” and to gain the preference of specific market segments. Are We Focusing Too Much on The Tools?

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/student_affairs_and_technology_blog_header.jpgBy Eric Stoller. If you ask me about the need for a technology competency in student affairs, I have a lot to say on the topic. It's been something that I've been advocating for since I was a graduate student in 2004. In 2013, technology and student affairs is still a topic that is full of more questions than answers. On social media sites like Twitter and Facebook (as well as on several blogs, including this one), the conversation about technology and student affairs abounds. Read more...
