http://www.nteu.org.au//var/files/thumbs/a780532dd116f8da145bac8c4c7961bc_default_w80_.jpgBy Jeannie Rea. Saturday March 8th is International Women's Day.
On this day, unions celebrate the achievements we have made over the years to improve the lives of working women and also point to what still remains to be done.
NTEU supports IWD, and is using the day to highlight the fight still ahead of women in attaining gender equality in the workplace.
To see a video outlining the achievements made by women over the years, see this link.
To see an outline of what unions will be fighting for working women in 2014, see this link.

Whether you work in an international office, a marketing and recruitment office, or another central administrative division, you are probably familiar with the challenges of getting things done in an inherently decentralised university environment. Getting agendas and opinions in alignment across offices or departments can seem impossible. While there may not be a one-size-fits-all solution, a few simple practices can go a long way in getting buy-in from outside your core team. More...

Women in Science – Explore the Data for Countries Worldwide

This blog, by UNESCO's Institute for Statistics (UIS) is about a new tool which presents cross-country data regarding women working in science-oriented careers. The post is part of Wikiprogress and Wikigender's contribution to tomorrow's International Women's Day.
Just 30% of the world’s researchers are women. While a growing number of women are enrolling in university, many opt out at the highest levels required for a research career. But a closer look at the data reveals some surprising exceptions. For example, in Myanmar and Bolivia, women account for 86% and 63% respectively of scientists, compared to France with a rate of 26% or Ethiopia at 8%.
Women in Science – a new interactive tool – presents the latest available data for countries at all stages of development. Produced by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS), the tool lets you explore and visualize gender gaps in the pipeline leading to a research career, from the decision to get a doctorate degree to the fields of research women pursue and the sectors in which they work. Expanding PISA’s circle of influence (part two)

http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRP4qIrraW46oa4crCboqTzadd3IE4yTumRAbMvuvR527xT31xml_tozi4By Barbara Ischinger, Director, OECD Directorate for Education and Skills, Michael Ward, Senior Policy Analyst, PISA for Development and Alejandro Gomez Palma, Policy Analyst, PISA for Development. In our previous blog about PISA for Development, we were pleased to announce Ecuador’s agreement to participate in this new pilot project. We’ve just returned from the Zambian capital of Lusaka and are delighted to report that Zambia has also agreed to participate – the first sub-Saharan African nation ever to take part in any PISA survey.
You might well ask: how can we compare the performance of students in highly developed countries – such as Japan and Germany – with that of students in low- and middle-income countries in Africa? And how do we assess the competencies of the tens of millions of 15-year-olds in developing countries who aren’t enrolled in school? These were precisely some of the challenges we put to ourselves when the idea of PISA for Development emerged from discussions with countries and OECD partners. Read more...

What’s at the root of women’s absence in STEM occupations?

http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRP4qIrraW46oa4crCboqTzadd3IE4yTumRAbMvuvR527xT31xml_tozi4By Marilyn Achiron Editor, Directorate for Education and Skills. If you sift through all the education data the OECD has produced over the past year, you’ll come up with decidedly mixed results when it comes to women’s (and girls’) progress. Education at a Glance 2013 told us that gender gaps in educational attainment are not only narrowing, but are, in some cases, reversing, and that women are now more likely than men to enter and complete a university-level programme. Results from the first Survey of Adult Skills, a product of the OECD Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), found that gender differences in the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) have narrowed considerably among 16-24 year-olds, and that, among younger adults, there is, on average, no gender difference in proficiency in numeracy or literacy. In fact, in those countries where there is a difference between young men’s and young women’s levels of literacy, it is young women who score higher. Read more...

What’s the difference? Try our International Women’s Day quiz and find out!

By Patrick Love. “How abominable before God is the Empire or Rule of Wicked Woman, yea, of a traitress and bastard.” That’s the opening of John Knox’s 1558 diatribe The First Blast of the Trumpet against the Monstrous Regiment of Women in which he explains that “To promote a Woman to bear rule, superiority, dominion or empire above any realm, nation or city is
A. Repugnant to nature.
B. Contumely to God.
C. The subversion of good order, of all equity and justice. Read more...

Here are some tips on how to use the ever-growing possibilities for creative job applications to make sure you get the job you want.
Imagine the following: you are about to apply for a job and decide to post a video clip on YouTube where you present your entire cover letter and CV through a self-written rap song. A couple of weeks later; you can pick and choose between interesting job offers – you have received over 50 of them. Does this sound like total humbug? It’s not. More...
