Protecting human rights online: new guidelines on internet intermediaries

In its Recommendation on the roles and responsibilities of internet intermediaries, the Committee of Ministers – the executive body of the organisation- therefore calls on states to provide a human rights and rule of law-based framework that lays out the main obligations of the states with respect to the protection and promotion of human rights in the digital environment, and the respective responsibilities of intermediaries. Istanbul Convention: clearing away the fog of misconceptions

In recent months, several Council of Europe member states have shown “cold feet” in moves to ratify the Council of Europe’s Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (more commonly known as the "Istanbul Convention").

Children in migration need information on reality, not just on rights, says a new report

Children in migration at all the stages of their journey to Europe should receive child-friendly and understandable information, which nevertheless must reflect the realities and difficulties they may face in the new environment, says the Council of Europe in a new report published today. The most effective way of providing the information is through personal verbal communication with professionally trained people the child trusts; leaflets and print material in clear language should be used as a complementary means; accurate peer-to-peer information should also be promoted. Greece: anti-corruption group offers praise and criticism

In two reports published today, the Council of Europe’s Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) mixed praise with criticism regarding Greek efforts to fight corruption in both the legislative and judicial branches of government.
One of the two reports – Corruption prevention in respect of members of parliament, judges and prosecutors – concludes that only six out of 19 previous recommendations have been “dealt with in a satisfactory manner.” (see the Greek version of the report). More...

Trafficking in human organs: Council of Europe convention enters into force

The Council of Europe Convention against Trafficking in Human Organs entered into force today in the five first states that have so far ratified it: Albania, Czech Republic, Malta, the Republic of Moldova and Norway.
The convention, the first international treaty aimed at preventing and combating trafficking in human organs, has been signed by another seventeen states, which have not yet ratified it: Armenia, Austria, Belgium, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Latvia, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Poland, Portugal, the Russian Federation, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine and the United Kingdom. San-Marino, Spain, Sweden: new reports by anti-discrimination body

According to the new report by European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) published today, San-Marino has made progress on access to naturalisation, criminalising discrimination on the basis of gender identity, and on data collection. However, San Marino still has no criminal legislation prohibiting discrimination on the grounds of language or colour, lacks an independent anti-discrimination body. More...
