Dr. Anne Gerritsen, University of Warwick – The Rise of Globalization

http://mediad.publicbroadcasting.net/p/wamc/files/styles/person_thumb/public/VoxPop.jpgBy . In today’s Academic Minute, Dr. Anne Gerritsen of the University of Warwick traces globalization to its sixteenth-century roots.
Dr. Anne Gerritsen
– The Rise of Globalization
Global historians have long argued about when exactly the economic and cultural connections between disparate parts of the world increased to such an extent that one can begin to speak of ‘globalization’.  Perhaps the most persuasive arguments have been made by those who see globalization emerging in Europe around 1500.
My research on the porcelain production centre of Jingdezhen in southern China shows it was by no means a uniquely European invention.  Around 1500, the Jingdezhen potters manufactured goods destined for consumers not only in China but throughout Asia, Africa and the Middle East.  By 1520, the Portuguese, too, were able to put in orders with the Jingdezhen potters.  Foreign delegations to the Chinese court were strictly limited, and foreign merchants certainly were not allowed to enter freely, so how did sixteenth-century Chinese potters tailor their production processes to such different market demands?

Student debt swells, federal loans now top a trillion

http://www.consumerfinance.gov/wp-content/themes/cfpb_nemo/_/img/logo.pngBy . While there has been considerable attention by policymakers on federal student loan interest rates taken out for the 2013-2014 academic year, outstanding student loan debt owed by existing borrowers continues to swell. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau estimates that outstanding debt is approaching $1.2 trillion as of May 2013. We also estimate that student loans guaranteed or held by the federal government have now crossed the $1 trillion mark. Last year, the Bureau released findings based on our research on the student loan market, revealing that total outstanding student loans were approximately $1 trillion as of the end of 2011. The 20% growth in student loan debt from the end of 2011 to May 2013 has been much faster than growth in revolving credit products (predominantly credit cards), which increased from $843 billion to $857 billion – an increase of less than 2%. Student loans now comprise the second largest form of consumer debt behind home mortgages. Read more...

'Colbert Report' Explains MOOCs

HomeAnant Agarwal, president of edX, one of the major providers of massive open online courses, appeared on "The Colbert Report" this week, where he faced some questions on MOOCs that journalists had previously failed to ask him, at least not the Stephen Colbert way. After Agarwal explained the basic concept of MOOCs, Colbert asked if he was talking about the University of Phoenix. Read more...

Visa delays hurt Canada's international students

http://www.cbc.ca/i/regional/v11/img/cbclogo_sprite.pngForeign service worker strike felt by McGill University. McGill University says visa delays could set back the education of some international students by a year.
“That’s a real possibility that there will be students missing in the ranks,” said McGill University’s Dean of Students, André Costopoulos. The strike by Canadian foreign service workers is causing a significant backlog in visa applications, which could have serious consequences for Canada’s international students. Read more...

'Forbes' Boots 4 Colleges From Its Rankings

HomeForbes, which this week unveiled its latest college rankings, banished four institutions for two years. The four that will not be eligible for the next two years are Claremont McKenna and Iona Colleges, and Bucknell and Emory Universities -- all of which have admitted to reporting false data in past year to various entities. "As a penalty for their dishonesty – and an acknowledgment of the growing scope of the problem – we are removing the four institutions from our list of the country’s best schools for two years," said an article in the magazine. Two-thirds of Americans believe college applicants should be admitted solely based on merit, even if that results in few minorities being admitted, while 28% believe an applicant's racial and ethnic background should be taken into account to promote diversity on college campuses. Three-quarters of whites and 59% of Hispanics believe applicants should be judged only on merit, while blacks are divided in their views. Read more...

'Shake Up' for Higher Ed

HomeBy Scott Jaschik. President Obama vowed Wednesday that he would soon unveil a plan to promote significant reform in higher education -- with an emphasis on controlling what colleges charge students and families.
"[I]n the coming months, I will lay out an aggressive strategy to shake up the system, tackle rising costs, and improve value for middle-class students and their families. It is critical that we make sure that college is affordable for every single American who’s willing to work for it," said Obama, in a speech at Knox College. Read more...

Pro-English or Anti-Immigrant?

HomeBy Scott Jaschik. A student's lawsuit against Pima Community College started going viral last week on conservative blogs and websites, featuring headlines like "War on English Language" and "Student Booted from U.S. College for Favoring English!" The college has denied the charges -- and some observers see the suit as an attack in the education of Latino students, a key constituency for Pima, which is located in Arizona. Read more...
