The disruptions to news reporting caused by the internet and social media are just beginning, according to this report released by Reuters. Facebook is vital worldwide for news distribution, Twitter in the US, UK and Spain, and WhatsApp in many other parts of the world. There's a disclaimer on the page saying "reports have not been peer reviewed and are provided without comment or assessment regarding research method and outcome" but I read through a dozen of so of them and find the work would be generally acceptable in academic journals.
