Près d’un million d’enfants de rapatriés d’Algérie vivent aujourd’hui en France. Ils sont artisans, chefs d’entreprise, journalistes, artistes, scientifiques, députés, ministres… Des Pieds-Noirs, dit-on d’eux aujourd’hui, lorsque l’on évoque leur origine. Des Français, dès lors qu’on les situe dans la société où ils vivent. On ne sait rien d’eux, ou si peu de choses, tant les analyses politiques, économiques, sociologiques les ont ignorés. C’est à ces enfants de Pieds-Noirs, nés sur le sol français, que j’ai consacré deux années d’enquêtes auprès d’un millier d’entre eux et écrit ce livre qui décrit ce qu’ils sont devenus, comment ils vivent aujourd’hui leur histoire, comment ils se représentent leur héritage et comment ils souhaitent le transmettre à leur descendance. J’ai levé le voile sur leurs blessures qui sont aussi celles de la France qui, près de soixante ans après avoir fermé sa parenthèse coloniale, ne se remet toujours pas de son Algérie.
