Saide Course Design and Materials Development Guide

The South African Institute for Distance Education (SAIDE) has just released this Course Design and Materials Development Guide. It's basically an online text with links to additional resources. According to SAIDE the purpose of the guide is to:

assist education practitioners who are about to engage in designing and developing education and training programmes, courses and materials to understand what practices lead to quality;
provide practical support in developing high quality programmes, courses and materials, through the use of a range of tools;
inform the evaluation of programme, course and materials design. More...

Britian's House of Lords has released a report critical of Research Council UK's recent policy on open access. It said that there was not enough consultation beforehand, that the policy wasn't articulated clarly enough, and that RCUK should have calculated the costs fo recommending a 'gold' model for open access, which requires that researchers or funders pay publishers to support open access. I was in Philadelphia today to talk about MOOCs and online learning with George Siemens and staff at Philadelphia University, including especially provost Randy Swearer. We had a lot of fun and we both appreciated the relaxed and informal approach that allowed us to explore more deeply wherever the conversation took is. The result was two videos:

People are going gaga over the hundred million or so collectively invested in MOOCs. It's an impressive spend, even if distributed across a number of companies, but dwarfed by the $1 billion investment Apollo Group is making to support "basically their entire learning- and learner-focused technology portfolio." Apollo Group, which owns the University of Phoenix and other online learning properties, may not be in the news so much these days, but it's still one of the dominant players in the field. More...

So I thought it was pretty impressive when Jay Cross posted a list of 195 posts about MOOCs yesterday. Authoritative. Then I got to thinking, did some checking, and realized that I have personally authored 453 posts about MOOCs. This link is to that page, and I've set it to automatically update weekly, so there will always be a current list. Meanwhile, I went over to mooc.ca and found that since last July that site had aggregated 3708 posts about MOOCs. So I think between the two sites we've got the topic pretty much covered.
