New identity launched for the voice of Canada’s universities at home and abroad

Effective today, the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) becomes Universities Canada/Universités Canada.
Under the AUCC banner, adopted in 1965, the organization has brought universities together, facilitating a cohesive voice and a forum for collective action. The shift to Universities Canada/Universités Canada highlights the association’s focused role in supporting universities’ significant contribution to Canada. More...

Over-qualification and skills-mismatch in the UK

The UK has too many over-qualified graduates taking up non-graduate jobs, according to a recent report by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). The paper, titled “Over-Qualification and Skills Mismatch in the Graduate Labour Market,” compares the rapid expansion of the UK higher education sector to the much slower growth of the high-skilled labour market, and warns of the mismatch as a threat to the UK economy. As many as 58.8% of UK graduates are in non-graduate jobs, a percentage only exceeded by two other OECD countries: Greece and Estonia. The situation is unsustainable given that almost half of university graduates will not earn enough to repay their loans in full, according to government estimates. More...

New Director-General of DG EAC to start in September

The change in DG EAC is the result of a broader reshuffling in the Commission in late June 2015 aimed at optimising the work of DGs and having “the right people in the right place, at the right time”, according to President Juncker. Another major goal of the Juncker Commission is to increase the share of women in senior management. To these ends, 11 Directors-General will change DGs, 8 Deputy Directors-General will become Directors-General and a number of Directors-General and Deputy Directors-General posts will be published and created. International students in Germany: A win/win situation

Germany invests around EUR 27 million annually for short-term study visits. However, in the short run these stays then generate an increase of the national gross value of EUR 292 million while creating more than 3 100 new jobs. If just two percent of these students and interns return to take up an employment in Germany after graduation, the public investment in education would be fully covered. More...

Free ACA/DZS seminar on joint and double degree programmes

Joint and double degree programmes are the theme of a one-day seminar which ACA and its Czech member, Dům zahraniční spolupráce (DZS), will hold in the beautiful city of Prague on 29 October 2015. The seminar is free of charge, but participants must cover their travel and accommodation cost. The seminar targets internationalisation specialist from universities and other higher education institutions, ministries of education, and higher education associations, amongst others. We expect most attendees to be from Europe, but we will also warmly welcome participants from other world regions. More...

DAAD study: Erasmus mobility in times of crisis

Despite the economic crisis, outgoing study mobility and outgoing placement mobility have both been rising steadily from academic year 2008/09 to 2012/13, averaging a 6% and 16% increase per year respectively across all Erasmus countries. A number of such trends such are illustrated in the 2014 edition of "Student and Staff Mobility in Times of Crisis", a study initiated by the DAAD. More...

ACA’s 47th European Policy Seminar: Discussing global rankings, 12 years after

On October 15, ACA will hold its 47th European Policy Seminar in Brussels. The theme of the seminar will be global rankings and their developments in the course of 12 years since the first global university ranking was launched by Shanghai Jiaotong University in 2003.
The proliferation of global and national university rankings implies that higher education institutions (HEIs) can no longer turn a blind eye to them. In one way or another, HEIs have to either make use of rankings or minimise the damage caused by others using rankings to outshine them at home or abroad. More...

Go8 Media Release: Elite Indian schools seek Go8 relationship for their top students

The Group of Eight Universities (Go8) is looking to further develop its Indian international student base, and this focus has also been requested by elite Inidain schools. The Go8 (currently in India with Minister Christopher Pyne) is today meeting representatives of seven elite private schools for a "schools collaboration forum" where the subject of studying at a leading Australian University will be a priority. Universities unite to lure elite Indian students

By Tim Dodd. Australia's top universities have teamed up with elite Indian private schools in "a concerted push" to attract students whose first preference would be Oxbridge or the US Ivy League. Australia's eight leading research universities, witnessed by federal Education Minister Christopher Pyne, will on Monday sign an agreement with six elite schools in Delhi to offer educational opportunities for students in the schools and training for their teachers, as a first step to luring them to Australia for their degree.
