The first four 'ages' ae defined by Winn (2002) (21 page PDF) as the studies of instructional design, message design, simulation/interaction design, and (the new) learning environment design. The 'fifth age' is proposed by Jameson (2013) (27 page PDF) and is the focus on "more critical, selective, strategic e‐leadership approaches to the adoption and use of educational technology." This paper is an update of that 'fifth age' and is "an exploratory review of the literature for the period 2103-2017." The result is a pretty good paper on work in educational technology management. This post explores the weeds of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), the language that creates the design for web pages. CSS 'specificify' rules to the method web browsers use to select which CSS declaration to apply to a particular part of a web page. For example, if you said the default text style for your whole page is 'Arial' and the default text style for this paragraph is 'Times New Roman', your browser needs to make a choice (and will choose the latter, according to CSS specificity). It turns out that the idea of putting digital rights management (DRM) into your printer ink is as bad as it sounds. "Here’s the kicker: if you cancel, your ink stops working. You read that right; as soon as your billing cycle ends the printer will not accept the ink anymore." You're also sending a whole lot of data to HP - page count, page type, and more. Visual Studio Code is my new favourite text editor, and has been responsible for a bit increase in my learning curve over the last month. It combines three core functions - file management (including version management with GitHub), text editing (with formatting that supports everything, even Perl), and command line terminals (so I can usefully write and test scripts in the same environment, and then publish in Docker or whatever). And as this article shows, there's a whole lot more for power users. Including (just announced this week) something called Live Share, which will allow multiple developers to work on the same project at the same time. It's all open source, written in Node, and compiled for the desktop using Electron. More...

It remains true that Flash is the best means to show video on the web (which is sad, when you think of it - because there are so many better alternatives, but the companies behind the standards could never agree on something everybody could use). EduRSS 0.2 Is Back

Edu-RSS is in operation once again, harvesting blogs and sending out pages and RSS feeds. Here is a list of the feeds harvested by Edu-RSS. I am now producing several output pages (and corresponding RSS feeds):
On this site, Edu_RSS runs several different lists:

(Click on the orange RSS icon in the address bar to get the RSS feed). Also related to this is the arrival, once again, of my Research Topics pages. These are also showing up as 'tags' on individual posts both in Edu_RSS and in this newsletter. I'm still working on that a bit - the topics will be displayed in categories some time in the future. And RSS feeds for the topics will be available again. Still some bugs in the system (especially in the auto-tagger). In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the way I've incorporated the Wikipedia content into the pages.
One thing to note. Edu_RSS, when it harvests, collects all the links cited in given posts. This will be used to track conversations and to rank pages. So far so good - but many feeds (especially WordPress feeds) only distribute short summaries of about 300 characters (Edu_RSS itself only retains 1000 characters, but only after analyzing the full content). I do not retrieve the original web page. So if you are distributing only a summary in your web page, the sites you link to are not being recorded. Just so you know. Learning with Networks

Terry Anderson, who is well known for his discussions of "various types and function of interaction in formal (usually distance) education contexts," looks at what John Dron calls the interaction between the student and the group. Now again, the word "group" is used loosely here - "Downes' sense of fluid, unbounded networks relates directly to the multiple forms, size and purpose of informal distributed synchronous and asynchronous collections of individuals that Dron refers to as groups." But, as Anderson notes, access to a network from a formal situation works differently than in an informal situation. And so he cautions teachers about what to expect when they access the network: the quality of interaction with the network will vary greatly according to the skill and experience of the student. Dave Warlick echoes my comments on Ning, including the 'club' remark: "I'm wondering if this sort of social network 'place' is really more for kids. Children need a clubhouse, a place where they can be themselves, pretend to be somebody else, make up their own rules, and dream of other places and times. But clubhouses have walls, as does Ning! It seems to be a container and less in the spirit of small pieces loosely joined. More...

Links to Ning and in particular describes the Library 2.0 network created on Ning as well as the more recent Classroom 2.0 network. I look at that and say, well what, now, you own Classroom 2.0? See - I don't think it's a network if it belongs to someone, if it is created, if it is associated with a place. It's more like, what, a club or a group in such a circumstance. And that is the key difference between social networks such as Ning and the edublogosphere. More...
