Latest issue of Advocate out now

The latest edition of the NTEU’s member magazine, Advocate (vol. 26, no. 1), is now online at www.nteu.org.au/advocate. Hard copy magazines will be mailed to members from today.
This special Federal Election edition of the Advocate contains a 20 page guide covering the main election issues. We've scored the major parties on their promises and commitments in higher education policy & funding, research policy, industrial relations, Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander policy, and climate change. Media release: International students providing reverse foreign aid to Australia

The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) has been expressing concerns for some time about the over-reliance of Australian universities on income generated from international student fees.

'Starvation wages': Majority of Victorian university workers in casual teaching trap

Sixty-three per cent of workers at Victoria’s eight biggest universities are casual or on fixed-term contracts, new figures show.
Women account for 57 per cent of these casual and fixed-term workers. Casuals do not receive holiday or sick leave and are unpaid during the midyear and summer breaks.
Between them, Melbourne, Monash, Swinburne, RMIT, Deakin, Victoria, La Trobe, and Federation universities employed almost 72,000 people last year, according to their annual reports. Just over 49,000 of these workers were casual or on fixed-term contracts. More...

Media release: Industrial action overwhelmingly endorsed at University of the Sunshine Coast

After 8 months of negotiations, National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) members at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) have voted to take industrial action. Eighty per cent of NTEU members at USC participated in the vote, with 91% of those voting to stop work if required. More...

Global Ranking from Iran

The Islamic World Citation Center, based in Iran, has published a global ranking of universities. There are four criteria, Research, Education, International Activity, and Innovation. The overall rankings are dominated by the USA with Harvard in first place followed by Stanford and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). More...

Best Value Colleges: Strong Showing by California Schools

The business magazine Forbes has published the latest edition of its Best Value Colleges ranking. This is an attempt to assist students and stakeholders by providing them with information about the economic value of a college education. Data were collected for 645 colleges and universities which were given scores for six criteria: quality determined by the 2018 Forbes Top Colleges, net price, net debt, alumni earnings, graduation rate, and access for low income students.
