This study (16 page PDF) explores "the use of social network analysis (SNA) for investigating learning communities specifically, communities of practice (CoP) and community of inquiry (CoI) in higher education online learning (HEOL)." Enough three letter acronyms (TLA). The literature review is a decent if uninspired presentation of SNA and CoI (you'd think publications would find a way to just assume this and save authors from presenting the same summary in paper after paper). The paper selection is the usual unrepresentative sample from commercial publications. The authors find twn whole papers to study and conclude that there's "a very limited number of studies that bring together constructs from SNA and these community-based frameworks." That is probably not true, but how can you refute the search methodology. More...

My first reaction was to roll my eyes when I read the title of this paper, because the designation of 'award winning' professors is unscientific at best. I remained sceptical on reading about the "five different roles: facilitator, course designer, content manager, subject matter expert, and mentor," because I know there's a lot more than that. But persisting with it paid off as it turns out to be an interesting and thorough article. There's a good (though not comprehensive) list of competencies (table 4) and an emphasis on the need for quality online instructors to be strong online learners themselves. The answer to the question posed in the title is "yes, mostly" (and I would quibble with the places where the paper says they don't mesh) but the real value of the paper is a step-by-step examination of different types of neural networks used in machine learning and (especially) deep learning. "the only hope is to use unsupervised learning model in which a learner should extract the pattern from given examples without explicit feedback. The repetition and relative similarity between objects in given examples may help a learner to cluster and combine different ideas together to come up with new object". More...

This paper compares a connectivist instructional method with a communicative language teaching (CLT) method in the teaching of English and concludes that the "connectivism instructional method provide unique opportunities for increasing the self-efficacy and task value of students by increasing social intractions and diversity for choosing tasks." This isn't a result of the type 'treatment X improved test score Y' but I do think that it points to one of the wider values of a connectivist approach. More...

The proposition advanced in this paper is that since connectivism draws on a number of precedent concepts, which are listed by the authors, it follows that connectivism should be seen as a new theory of learning. "This theoretical approach means an evolution from the existing theoretical knowledge instead of a real theoretical revolution, as it was stated in the initial thesis," write the authors. Good summary of the proceedings from yesterday's Eduserv conference on Second Life. My only quibble is that the advice, "Second Life is here, now - use it," does not recognize the existence of various alternatives, a number of which were mentioned by several panelists. See also this summary by Shirley Williams. And Kathryn Greenhill offers a really nice detailed summary.

Jo Kay stayed up 'til one a.m. to watch my talk and then was disappointed, not because she disagreed with me, but because the wanted to see more emphasis on the projects and the potential. Fine - and that's what the other five speakers provided. And if I hadn't raised the issues (which are genuine) nobody would have. Is that a fair waiy to treat people who are trying to learn about the technology?

Angela Thomas, meanwhile, posted a summary of the sessions as seen through Second Life. John Kirriemuir posted a number of screen shots in his summary. And see Andrew Stewart's longish commentary, to which I've added a comment clarifying part of my argument. Barbara Dieu also commented, saying that my criticisms should not prevent people from experimenting with Second Life. More...
