Running out of Steam: Taking Stock of Germany’s Energiewende

66b94efa-f77d-49f2-9030-193b6047b0b1Outside of Japan, nowhere did the Fukushima meltdown have more of an impact than in Germany. Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government had published a policy document outlining its energy transition a mere six months prior in September 2010. Though the Energiewende, as it is known, has its roots in the anti-nuclear movement of the 1970s and in particular a groundbreaking study published in 1980, it was developed in its current form as a policy at the beginning of the 2000s. Nuclear power was to be a means for the country to transition to clean technology. But less than three months after the Japanese disaster, Merkel announced all of Germany’s nuclear power plants were to be shut down by 2022. More...

Danger to Planet Stressed as Fiji Presides over COP23

66b94efa-f77d-49f2-9030-193b6047b0b1Not only are the years 2015, 2016 and 2017 set to be the three hottest years ever recorded, but they have been punctuated by extreme weather events

“The sea is swallowing villages, eating away at shorelines, withering crops. Relocation of people... Cries over lost loved ones, dying of hunger and thirst.  It's catastrophic. It’s sad…but it's real. My home, my school, my source of food, water, and money was totally destroyed. My life was in chaos.” [1]

At the beginning of November 2017, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) highlighted the danger: the pledges to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions made so far by states worldwide will result in a temperature rise of at least 3°C by 2100. More...

The Reality Behind the German Jobs Miracle

66b94efa-f77d-49f2-9030-193b6047b0b1The fact the far-right eurosceptic party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) secured 94 seats in the Bundestag in the September 2017 federal elections, becoming the third-largest party, belies the image of an economically prosperous and stable country Germany has enjoyed in recent years in France. Good Work Wanted - The UK reviews how to right the 21st century workplace

66b94efa-f77d-49f2-9030-193b6047b0b1The Good Work review the RSA’s Matthew Taylor conducted for the UK government in 2017 is a blueprint for how the country’s public and private sectors can help ensure UK citizens enjoy fair and decent work, with a minimum level of social protection. As such it is relevant for developed countries such as France, faced as they are with similar labour issues.
In his 1930 essay “Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren”, John Maynard Keynes foretells a world a century in the future where humankind will at last be free of the necessity of toil. He foresees an era when people in advanced economies will be faced for the first time with their “permanent problem – how to use [their] freedom from pressing economic cares”. He envisions people working three-hour shifts or a fifteen-hour week not because they have to but because they are confronted with this newfound conundrum. More...

Ever since Keynesian economics fell out of favour in the wake of the stagflation that hit Western economies in the 1970s, the prevailing view among most policy makers in advanced economies has been that so-called free markets do a better job of driving economic activity than governments. More...
