Running out of Steam: Taking Stock of Germany’s Energiewende

Outside of Japan, nowhere did the Fukushima meltdown have more of an impact than in Germany. Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government had published a policy document outlining its energy transition a mere six months prior in September 2010. Though the Energiewende, as it is known, has its roots in the anti-nuclear movement of the 1970s and in particular a groundbreaking study published in 1980, it was developed in its current form as a policy at the beginning of the 2000s. Nuclear power was to be a means for the country to transition to clean technology. Good Work Wanted - The UK reviews how to right the 21st century workplace

The Good Work review the RSA’s Matthew Taylor conducted for the UK government in 2017 is a blueprint for how the country’s public and private sectors can help ensure UK citizens enjoy fair and decent work, with a minimum level of social protection. As such it is relevant for developed countries such as France, faced as they are with similar labour issues.
In his 1930 essay “Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren”, John Maynard Keynes foretells a world a century in the future where humankind will at last be free of the necessity of toil. He foresees an era when people in advanced economies will be faced for the first time with their “permanent problem – how to use [their] freedom from pressing economic cares”. He envisions people working three-hour shifts or a fifteen-hour week not because they have to but because they are confronted with this newfound conundrum. More...
