How I became (blog) literate...

I had a lot on my mind as I presented at the blog.ack.uk conference Friday in London (slides and MP3 Audio), and my task was to summarize the proceedings of two sets of four concurrent sessions. This is what came out of that effort. I think that my major message is on the last slide, and most of all, that "what matters is that we are honest with ourselves, and that we share without reservation." Honesty is hard, and sometimes people choose the safer path. And sharing is hard, and sometimes people choose silence. But the cost, I find, is greater than the sacrifice, even if indifferently you can watch it be borne by others. You tell the world what you want with your own conduct, and ultimately, you reap what you sow. My message was heard, I could see, and as I leave London and blog.ac.uk behind me and say good-bye, I wave in silent salute, "Hail, well met, and may the road before you be straight and true." The Chronicle of Higher Education has come out with yet another vaguely anti-technology article, this time about giving professors the capacity to shut down wireless access in a classroom. But more interesting is this essay in response by Ken Fisher pointing out that shutting down wireless will not only annoy students, it merely delays the inevitable. More...

A nice write-up by Jay Cross of the current ADETA Newsletter (well worth a look) but with some nice irony. Cross writes about the A-List blogging set, "The A-list blogosphere is an immense echo chamber," and comments, "The training and development world sometimes suffers the same narrowmindedness." Well maybe. And I certainly agree with him when he says we should consult "non-traditional sources." But who is featured in the ADETA Newsletter. More...

Clarence Fisher points to a new website for students and teachers, Captain Copyright, providing free lesson plans and materials. The site, which appears to be promoted by Canada's copyright clearance industry (see the heavy-handed IP notice), is thinly veiled propaganda - the copyright violator in the kids' carton actually steals the drawings from the comic book artist before selling them in the hall for a quarter each. Interesting that the actual artist of the cartoon gets no credit on the site. More...

Via Chris Lehmann, I agree with this: "Just as supermarket magnates realized that when people shop for groceries, they want to do more than stock the fridge, we need to understand that the final result of a dozen years of education isn't just a gilt-trimmed diploma. It's about creating a brighter and more compassionate society. First, however, we must devote as much energy and thinking to our schools as we do our food emporiums". More...

Hiatus

I have always tried to offer as much of myself as I could through this service and others in my work and in my own time. It has never been enough, which was made clear to me today, but I am tired and don't have anything more to give.
Accordingly, I am placing this newsletter and website on hiatus for an indefinite period. I will be back when I'm back.
Please know that I have always valued and held in the highest esteem the work that all of you are doing to try to make things better, especially for the young. My dedication toward your objectives, toward social justice and opportunity, toward a better life for all, is never wavering, will never waver.
It is time for a darkening of the light as I retreat and think about what I am going to do and how I am going to do it, but know that the light will never flicker and never fade. I wish you well in your endeavours, and I will be back to walk the long hard road alongside you.

Emma Duke-Williams (who should put her name somewhere on her blog) writes about a Guardian article that examines the rising popularity of a social networking service called Bebo. Students, she notes, "are now more likely to put the PC on when they get home" instead of turning on the TV. The authors consider the need for different time management strategies on the part of online instructors. Probably the best advice offered is to use the tools that are available - a little time spent learning how a tool is best used can save a lot of time in the long run. I would probably have added a section on sharing the workload, both with students (who can to a large degree answer each others' questions and moderate their own forums) and with colleagues (who can share notes, references and other resources).
