Reality CheckED

The group Public Agenda has launched a blog titled Reality CheckED. The group is new to me, but I get the sense that they're popular, if the reference from the NSBA blog can be taken as a guide. For myself, I like the approach, and in particular the blog's use of strong, sharp and cutting logic. Like this: "If you were in the workplace and there was bad behavior all around you making it difficult to do your work, would it not be the responsibility of the company to ensure that basic workplace rules are enforced?". Learner Identity Management Framework

The topic of personal identity - and therefore, learner identity (though not everyone considers the latter to be a subset of the former, which is a problem) continues to increase in importance in educational technology circles. This is, to my mind, a symptom of the reality that learners are affiliated less and less with a particular institution, which is a good thing. But what will a Learner Identity Management Framework (LIMF) look like? I have some concerns with this report tabled in Australia. For example, it calls for "A Trust Scheme" that "involves establishing ground-rules such that the owners of information can be confident that any data they transfer will be handled appropriately by the recipient." I'm not sure what to think of these new 'safe' social networking services. Like Whyville, "an online virtual world that immerses children in a video game-like experience where they must manage money, make sure they eat properly." OK, nice. Bratislava, Slovakia

On Sunday I had a day off and took the short train ride to Bratislava, Slovakia. Despite a difference of opinion with the Slovakian police (who felt I should present a passport to enter the country, but who kindly let me both in and out without one) my visit was charming and intriguing. PodTech Goes the Scoble! and Why it Matters!

I never really followed Robert Scoble's blog after the first few weeks. It was an interesting experiment, though, and Christian Long captures the end of his term with eloquence and in a way that makes it directly relevant to me. Because, isn't this what I have been saying recently? "If we do not soon begin to realize that the learner ultimately decides what learning environments they will join, that engagement is not about force-feeding and innovation is not about tightly wrapped up corporate policies and that when you have talent in your ranks you better provide them the most dynamic learning and collaboration tools known to mankind or lose them. I know I said there would be no newsletter today. And with a full-day set of flights from Vienna to Moncton, that would normally be the case. But today's newsletter began life somewhere over the mid-Atlantic, and Lufthansa's onboard wireless (as well as a 4.5 hour battery life on my laptop) allowed me to linger over this issue as the clouds drifted by. The service has been quite acceptable, if a little expensive. And now I'm somewhere over Quebec and ready to send this puppy out just before we land. More...

Blog coverage of the Vice-Chancellor's Forum at the Open University, which I addressed last week. The notes are pretty point-form, but the post as a whole is an accurate reflection of the event. This extract from the discussion captures the flavour of the event: "MR - with 1 million alumni and 200k students, the OU should turn itself into a business... CY - HE sector is likely to have individual institutions failing. HE has the desire to do everything in a vertical organisation. Innsbruck, Austria

So today is the last day of my trip to Austria, an interesting discussion with the good people at the Centre for Social Innovation in Vienna. Sadly FTP issues are preventing me from uploading slides or audio, but I'll get both online when I return to the office later this week. Tomorrow morning it's off to the airport and back home to Moncton. My thanks to everyone in London, Milton Keynes, Manchester, Innsbruck and Vienna for the kind and supportive welcome you have all given me. And while I have spent a lot of this trip wrestling with myself and with my own thoughts and ideas, you have all helped me see some of the wider impact of the work we are doing together.
