RUR Reputation Rankings Published

The Russian RUR rankings agency has just published the latest edition of its international university reputation rankings. The data is collected through the Global Institutional Profiles Project now run by Clarivate Analytics. It includes 783 universities from 72 countries. Of these 140 are located in the US, one less than last year, 73 in the UK, 67 in Russia, 40 each in China and Japan, 36 in Taiwan and 26 in Australia.Survey respondents are restricted to those with publications in journals listed in the Web of Science. Latin American Rankings

This year’s winner is the State University of Campinas, Brazil, which pushes the University of São Paulo, also in Brazil, into second place. Eight countries and 81 institutions are represented in the rankings of which 32 are from Brazil, 15 from Chile and 13 from Mexico. There are two universities from Argentina in the table this year although the University of Buenos Aires, along with some other prominent Latin American institutions, is still absent. More...

Webometrics Rankings - July 2017

The methodology of the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities has gone through several changes since the ranking began in 2004. There is a 50% weighting for Visibility, the number of external networks originating back links to the institution’s webpages (data from Ahrefs and Majestic), 35% for Excellence measured by the number of papers among the top 10% most cited in 26 disciplines over a five year period (data from Scimago), 10% for Transparency or Openness, measured by the number of citations from top authors (data from Google Scholar Citations), and 5% for Presence, measured by the number of pages of the main webdomain of the institution (data derived from Google). QS is International Students’ Favourite Ranking

The US education technology company, Hobsons, has released information about its survey of international students. Nearly a fifth of respondents said that rankings were the most important factor they considered when choosing a country in which study and 23.5% said it was most important for choosing a university. Forbes Identifies High Value Colleges

The US business magazine Forbes has published the latest edition of America’s Top Colleges. These rankings, now in their tenth year, take a strict return on investment approach based on measures of output that indicate direct economic benefits for students. It says nothing about research, reputation or teaching quality. More...

British Council report on global higher education

The British Council has released a report, The shape of global higher education: National Policies Framework for International Engagement, by Janet Ilieva and Michael Peak. Four countries, Australia, China, Germany, Malaysia and the United Kingdom, get very high scores for openness and for quality assurance and recognition while Ethiopia is the only country to receive a very low score for openness. However, six countries get a very low grade for quality assurance: Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ethiopia, Mexico and Nigeria. More...

Shanghai Subject Rankings

ShanghaiRanking has just announced the release of its 2017 global ranking of academic subjects. Altogether 52 universities were ranked, including 6 in the natural sciences, 4 in the life sciences, 22 in engineering, 6 in the medical sciences and 14 in the social sciences. Universities are included only if they reach a threshold of publications in the InCites database over the period 2011-15, ranging from 25 to 200. More...

Drive to Enhance Research and Higher Education in Algeria

Algeria has become increasingly concerned about the quality of its higher education system and scientific research. An article in University World News by Laeed Zaghlami notes that this is partly the result of the country’s poor performance in global university rankings.
