Try Clubs, Activities to Develop Skills at a U.S. College

U.S. News CompassBy Vikas Jagwani. The number and variety of clubs and activities available at U.S. colleges and universities often surprises international students. But these clubs are a great way to build important skills, like leadership, and understand cultural differences.
As a prospective student, I didn't consider the clubs on campus to be important to my choice of school, but they've ended up being a large part of my college experience.
The motivation to raise my hand and get involved came my freshman year of college. The opportunity to hold various leadership positions in different organizations has been one of the keys to my success at Drury University. More...

Competent at What?

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Paul Fain. Competency-based education appears to be higher education’s "next big thing." Yet many academics aren’t sure what it is. And that goes double for lawmakers and journalists. A new group is stepping in to try to clear up some of the confusion. The nascent Competency-Based Education Network (C-BEN) will include up to 20 institutions that offer competency-based degrees or are well on their way to creating them. Read more...

We need to assess student literacy skills

http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQWMTBx0CPzMFK637Zb6AgNbjhxfVRtTVkrwKoq4ZPL2p18KKWOEwB3AWIBy Nicholas Dion and Vicky Maldonado. While the benefits of strong literacy skills are well established, there is growing concern that Canadians’ reading and writing skills, including those of students attending postsecondary institutions in Ontario, are not meeting expectations. This is especially worrisome given that strong literacy skills are critical to students as they graduate into a highly competitive and increasingly globalized labour market. More...

Cedefop - European Centre for the Development of Vocational TrainingA lively two-day debate at the Cedefop conference on the shift to learning outcomes and its impact (21 and 22 November 2013, Thessaloniki) concluded that learning outcomes are here to stay but there is still a lot of work to be done. Opening the conference, Cedefop Director James Calleja told 140 participants from 27 countries that ‘learning outcomes raise the employability profile of qualifications’. He talked about ‘an issue of paramount importance’ to European vocational education and training (VET) and lifelong learning developments, and added that ‘the challenge for all of us is to converge diverging approaches in writing learning outcomes’. Rapid Skill Acquisition: The First 20 Hours

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/Screen%20Shot%202011-12-12%20at%2012.29.48%20PM.png?itok=ITDqfJNPBy Ashley Sanders. "Skill is the result of deliberate, consistent practice. And in early stage practice, quantity and speed trump absolute quality. The faster and more often you practice the more rapidly you'll acquire the skill." (Kaufman, Chapter 2)
As a grad student, it is incredibly difficult to learn how to perform new skills at the level necessary for academic work.  And yet, we're expected to do so, whether it’s learning a foreign language, technical equipment, digital skills, or research methodologies. What’s more, if there’s something we want to learn just for the fun of it or for our health (yoga or meditation, for example), forget about it! We often feel our schedules couldn’t possibly accommodate it. Josh Kaufman's book, The First 20 Hours, offers a solution: rapid skill acquisition (RSA).  Kaufman defines 10 principles of RSA, walks the reader through each one, and offers tips and suggestions from his own experience. Is the young generation properly skilled for the challenges of tomorrow?

http://www.cedefop.europa.eu/EN/Images-UserInterface/bg_cedefopLogo.gifCedefop's Steve Bainbridge took part in a debate on the subject organised by The Economist in Athens. He argued that 'in response to a more demanding world, more young people than ever before are preparing themselves through learning.'
The Cedefop senior analyst added that, by 2025, the best qualified will be the young and that 'given the current economic situation we need to do more to create opportunities for our young people to use and develop the skills they have.'
Michael Jacobides, Sir Donald Gordon Chair of Enrepreneurship and Innovation, London Business School, argued the opposite. Mr Bainbridge narrowly won the vote.
