Special Eurobarometer survey on the European area for skills and qualifications Education and training don't match available job
A new Eurobarometer survey on the European area of skills and qualifications' (Special Eurobarometer 417) shows also that around a quarter (23%) of EU citizens feel that their education or training has not provided them with the skills to find a job in line with their qualifications.
While over half of the respondents (56%) think their qualifications would be recognised in other Member States, 6% tried to work or study in another Member State but were unable to do so, either because their qualifications were not recognised by their prospective employer or education institution, or because the respondents lacked information about recognition of their qualifications abroad.

Productivity Implications of a Shift to Competency-Based Education: An environmental scan and review of the relevant literature

I think this is true: "There is no systematic, comprehensive study indicating that the purported skills from a CBE program translate into performance, either in graduation results or in the labour market." That does not mean that competency-based education is the wrong way to go, say the authors of a report (75 page PDF) from from the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO), but it does suggest that it should be embraced cautiously. Canadian Labour Market— The Roots of Budding Change
By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Canadian Labour Market— The Roots of Budding Change
Benjamin Tal, Nick Exarhos, CIBC, June 21, 2014
A report from CIBC reaffirms the existence of a skills gap in Canada. "Large swaths of those unemployed are not what employers are seeking... lower levels of unemployment generally occur when there are higher levels of job vacancies. That intuitive relationship has failed to hold true in Canada since 2011, with higher vacancies and higher unemployment positively correlated. More...
Ask the Administrator: What Skill Sets do Deans Need?
While I enjoy research and teaching, the problems I'm finding really interesting are on the admin side: I've been doing some external relations and curricular development stuff for my faculty, I've realized I've got a decent head for looking at student data, and can run a reasonably functional committee. My question is: if you were in my position and thinking, over the next four or five years at getting ready for a serious admin role, like a Dean, what skill set would you work on developing? I know you've covered the different career pathways before for those , but I wonder what skills or experiences you wish you had.
Context matters quite a bit, so I’ll speak to the types of deanships I’ve seen at community colleges. Read more...
