FUEN urges a more efficient implementation and the upgrade of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages

In some states minorities are given the opportunity to work together with the governments on the implementation of the Charter. According to the proposal, this good example ought to be followed by more states. The document also underlines: people working in positions where they implement the provisions of the Charter must be made aware of the obligations their state committed too, when ratifying this instrument. Minorities in Germany and Ukraine: Project continuation

Last week, from 13.-17.11., the project “Building Bridges between minorities in Germany and Ukraine”, organised by the Society for Threatened Peoples (GfbV) in cooperation with the Crimean Tatar youth organisation DEVAM, continued with its second part in Kiev. The aim of the project was to build an intensified cooperation between minority representatives and organisations of both countries and to get to know more about institutional structures and legal state of the minorities in both countries. A new milestone: 350,000 signatures for the Minority SafePack Initiative!

The petition campaign for the Minority SafePack Initiative reached a new milestone, announced FUEN President Loránt Vincze on December 8th. 350,000 citizens of the European Union have signed the petition for the European Citizen’s Initiative since the beginning of the campaign late September this year. The petition was signed on paper by 265,000 EU citizens and online by an additional 85,000, on www.minority-safepack.eu. More...

Western Balkans: Minority Commissioner’s Office opened in Bosnia and Herzegovina

We are happy to announce that our work with minorities in Western Balkans is showing some very concrete results. On this year’s International Day for Tolerance, several stakeholders of our common project Minorities in Western Balkans* have gathered in the city of Bijeljina to formally open the »Minority Commissioner's Office«. The opening of the office is the result of our common path over the last one and a half years, where the Project partners FUEN, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), European Centre for Minority Issues (ECMI) and the State Chancellery of Schleswig-Holstein exchanged best practices in minority protection with our partners from the Western Balkans. Hungarian parties and Hungarian communities in different countries unanimously support the MSPI

The Hungarian Permanent Conference (MÁÉRT), a forum for organisations representing the interests of Hungarian communities in different countries, unanimously adopted a closing statement during its last session in November in support of the Minority SafePack Initiative. Degree apprenticeships: the benefits from an employer’s perspective

Apprentices are not the only ones who can reap rewards from this new educational pathway.
The Industrial Strategy published today says that “apprenticeships are a vital UK-wide vehicle for employer investment in their workforce, enabling employers to develop the skills and behaviours that they need, as well as offering opportunities for those already in work and those entering it for the first time”. International panel members needed for REF 2021

It is essential that we draw on international expertise throughout the REF review process.
The Royal Society is very fond of pointing out that it had a Foreign Secretary some 60 years before the UK Government did. While it is perhaps a little disingenuous to suggest that international engagement is linked to a particular job title, the observation does serve to emphasise that an international outlook has long been part of the fabric of research. Six myths about the ‘Prevent duty’ in universities

The ‘Prevent duty’ which higher education providers are required to follow has been controversial, but the arguments used against it are largely based on myths and misunderstanding.
The Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 (CTSA) has aroused great controversy by imposing a legal duty upon schools, universities, the NHS and other institutions to ‘have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism’ (the ‘Prevent duty’). However, in an article published in the January 2018 issue of Public Law, we argue that the campaign against the Act and the duty in higher education rests largely upon myths, six of which are particularly prevalent.
