Adam Curry Caught in Sticky Wiki

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Rogers Candenhead: Adam Curry Caught in Sticky Wiki, Workbench December 2, 2005
When I developed Ed Radio a couple of years ago, I was pretty pleased with it. What it did was to use Edu_RSS to scrape RSS feeds for MP3 audio links, then combine them into a single feed, so that when you clicked on the link the audio would start playing in your player. It was an obvious and important step in the development of podcasting, and that's why there is a reference to it in the Wikipedia entry about podcasting. I don't know whether it directly influenced Dave Winer and Adam Curry (I've long suspected Winer of reading this website, but he never cites my work in his blog), but it makes it clear that what became podcasting in the fall of 2004 was the result of many voices. The Poetry Archive

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Various authors: The Poetry Archive December 2, 2005
This site represents what online learning should aspire toward: it offers poetry, as read by the poets, for use in schools. What would make it better? MP3 recordings (instead of unusable Real Audio) that can be mashed with images and animations to add texture to videos. More...

What Harm Can a Blog Do?

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Miguel Guhlin: What Harm Can a Blog Do?, Mousing Around December 2, 2005
A helpful look at the other side of the blog blocking debate as Miguel Guhlin reposts an entry by Nancy Willard (who is very well versed in this discussion) from WWWEDU. The post, basically, is a list of the things that can go wrong with school blogs, everything from bullying to defamation to copyright infringement. More...

Various authors: R&D Funding in Atlantic Universities, Maritime Provinces

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Various authors: R&D Funding in Atlantic Universities, Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission December 1, 2005
This report is likely to be of more regional interest, but its analysis of research funding in Atlantic Canada is worth reading, particularly from the perspective of less developed economies. Research in such an environment is different than in, say, central Canada, because there isn't the base of large corporate research. This means that the direction of research funding and research direction needs to be different. More...

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Jo Sanders: Bibliography on Gender and Technology in Education, The Center for Women & Information Technology December 1, 2005
Could be useful, and I carry few enough resources on this topic: "The Bibliography on Gender and Technology in Education has been created by gender equity specialist Jo Sanders. Focusing primarily on information technology, the bibliography is comprehensive as of 2005 and draws on international research as well as intervention literature. More...

Resources for Round One of the Toolkit Projects Now Available

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Resources for Round One of the Toolkit Projects Now Available
These resources relate to the E-Learning Framework as supported by Britrain's JISC. Navigation to the resources themselves is just awful; the link you are given opens this page, where you need to notice links to the projects have opened in the left margin; click on a project such as APIS and then back to the left hand margin where (look carefully now) a link to the project resources page has opened. You're still not there. More...
