The High-Level Group was created upon the recommendation of the Expert Group and was endorsed by the EUA Council in January 2016. This group aims to bring together high-level leaders engaged in negotiating “big deals” with publishers on behalf of universities, and to support their institutions in these processes. In this first meeting, the High-Level Group focused its discussions on EUA’s work in mapping the European Open Access landscape and explored the main elements relevant for universities involved in “big deal” negotiations. More...

This webinar will give an overview of performance-based funding of universities in Europe based on EUA’s latest publication on the topic. The focus will be on funding formulae with output indicators (such as numbers of graduates) and performance contracts. Furthermore the webinar will discuss the opportunities, risks and limits of performance-based funding and offer advice and good practice examples from across Europe. More...

In order to answer the call, launched in February 2016, EUA held a consultation with its university members and its Research Policy Working Group. After analysing the results, EUA stresses in its response that the main mission of a European Innovation Council (EIC) should be the enhancement of Europe’s competitiveness and the creation of jobs for the benefit of society. EUA also stresses that an EIC should take into account the strong relation between investment in research-based innovation, investment in the development of highly-skilled workers and the resulting economic and social innovation. More...

As the representative organisation of European universities, EUA takes part in the project advisory board providing a university perspective to the U-Multirank consortium. When looking at the participation of EUA members in the U-Multirank 2016, EUA notes that the level of participation by EUA member institutions seems to have stabilised with about 60% included in the ranking both in 2015 and 2016. Most of them participated by publicly providing data to the consortium, but many only through publicly available bibliometric data. More...

In early April 2016, EUA published a report focusing on the contribution of universities to regional development and innovation.
The report, entitled “Universities Promoting Regional Innovation across Europe” was presented by Professor Peter Haring Bolívar, Chair of EUA’s Expert Group on RIS, on the occasion of the EUA Council on 6 April 2016. More...

EUA expresses solidarity with universities and scholars where academic freedom is under pressure, especially in Turkey where there are reports of retaliation against academics who have expressed their views on military action in south-eastern Turkey. EUA stands up for university values and calls on all governments, universities and scholars, as well as all higher education stakeholders to remain committed to the internationally recognised principles of academic freedom and to work towards constructive dialogue. More...

EUA held its biggest networking conference – the annual conference – at the National University of Ireland (NUI) in Galway from 7 to 8 April 2016. Under the theme “Bricks and clicks for Europe: building a successful digital campus”, more than 300 university leaders took part in discussions on digital technologies and their impact on the higher education sector, including university staff and students. More...

The European Research Council (ERC) awarded €647 million in “Advanced Grants” to 277 senior researchers in April 2016.
The funding, which is awarded under the “excellent science” pillar of the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme, will enable the winners to pursue their ideas and carry out frontier research. More...

The Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences in Berlin, Germany, Trier University in Germany and the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Kosice, Slovakia were approved as individual full members.
