The Disability Support Programme provides funding to eligible higher education providers to undertake activities that assist in removing barriers to access for students with disability.

Additional Support for Students with Disabilities (ASSD)
The objectives of the ASSD component of the programme are to:

• provide funding to eligible higher education providers to assist with the high costs incurred in providing educational support and/or equipment to students with disability to enable them to participate in higher education; and
• encourage efficient and effective use of equipment and education resources to support students with disability.

Eligible higher education providers can apply for reimbursement of their ASSD expenses incurred in the 2014 calendar year using the application form provided by the Department in early 2015.

Performance-based Disability Support Funding
The objective of the Performance-based Disability Support Funding component of the Disability Support Programme is to encourage higher education providers to implement strategies to attract and support students with disability.

Predictive analytics--using massive amounts of historical data to predict future events--is a practice that’s making it easier and faster for colleges to decide which students to enroll and how to get them to graduation. But using data in this way may make decision-making processes harder, not easier. That’s because predictive analytics can aid in discriminatory practices, make institutional practices less transparent, and make vulnerable individuals’ data privacy and security.
In a new paper, The Promise and Peril of Predictive Analytics in Higher Education: A Landscape Analysis, authors Manuela Ekowo and Iris Palmer describe how predictive analytics are used in higher education to identify students who need extra support, steer students in courses they will do well in, and provide digital tools that can customize the learning process for individual students. The United States faces a pressing national security and competitiveness challenge rooted in a shortage of a diverse, highly skilled workforce, particularly in vital cross-disciplinary fields such as data science and analytics, cybersecurity, and information technology.
