What We're Taught, What We Retain

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/CRW.jpgBy Lee Skallerup Bessette. I love music. Specifically, pop music. I grew up with morning radio, but not talk radio, but Top-40 radio. Music videos were new and exciting. The radio was always on in the car, with more Top-40. And when I came of age, as a tween and then teen, we all got our own Walkman, so I carried my music everywhere, carefully curating mixed tapes for any and all occasions, waiting for the right song during the weekly Top-40 countdown. Scholarship By Any Other Name

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/CRW.jpgBy Lee Skallerup Bessette. Most people will recognize this famous movie line, taken from Field of Dreams, starring Kevin Costner. The movie itself is based on the book Shoesless Joe by Canadian writer W.P. Kinsella. Kinsella wrote two kinds of fiction: fiction about baseball and fiction about Natives, or “Indians” as he would have called them. More...

Academic Conversations

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/CRW.jpgBy Lee Skallerup Bessette. I’m in the midst of preparing a webinar on curating and maintaining an academic presence online.  Early on during the presentation, I encourage the participants to Google themselves, and I show them a screenshot of when I Googled myself. Relationships Matter

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/CRW.jpgBy Lee Skallerup Bessette. I was reading the recent piece in The Atlantic about the partnership between Starbucks and Arizona State University. The title is misleading because the program is so new that no one has yet graduated and “benefited” from having a degree, but it does present a nice click-bait headline, coupled with a framing narrative from a long-time, older service worker who can’t get ahead because she doesn’t have a degree. The Teaching Track

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/CRW.jpgBy Lee Skallerup Bessette. A few weeks ago (ok, almost three months now – HOW IS IT ALREADY JUNE), Michael Bérubé wrote “A New Model of Tenure” here at IHE, calling for a “teacher track” for more teaching-intensive positions. Doing It Wrong

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/CRW.jpgBy Lee Skallerup Bessette. Lately, I’ve been having a very distinct feeling that I have been doing it all wrong. Although, honestly, I’m not even sure what “it” is for me anymore, so how can I even know that I’m wrong about what I am doing? But that feeling is still there, like I am missing something, some truth that alludes me, to help it all make sense, to feel like I am not wrong, somehow. Off-centered, off-balance, off-pace, slightly askew. More...

Reflections From a New Faculty Developer

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/CRW.jpgBy Lee Skallerup Bessette. Last week, I was in Asheville for the Institute for New Faculty Developers, which is put on by POD. These are my “people” now, this is my community, at least professionally. Some were already a part of my larger community, those who mentored me and helped me get into this profession to begin with. More...

Public Spaces

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/CRW.jpgBy Lee Skallerup Bessette. I’ve been participating haphazardly in #clmooc again this year. This week’s prompt is about public spaces. More...

Reflections on #HILT2015

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/CRW.jpgBy Lee Skallerup Bessette. Last week, I was in Indianapolis co-teaching, with Jesse Stommel, a week-long course on Digital Pedagogy and Networked Learning at HILT 2015. I’ve attended a number of Digital Humanities summer institutes, both through HILT and DHSI, and I was really excited to participate on the other side of the proverbial fence. More...

On Reading

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/CRW.jpgBy Lee Skallerup Bessette. I read all the time, all day. I read tweets, I read articles linked in the tweets, I read articles on and reviews of books that are linked, recommended in the tweets. I read about people’s lives, about current events, about tragedy and comedy, in 140 characters. More...
