Books, the Web, and Listening Across Our Beliefs

By Joshua Kim. My faith in social media was restored in the first week of 2018.  All it took was a book, a comment, and a tweet.
The book is Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think Like a 21st-Century Economist by Kate Raworth.
I gave this book my attention, and I recommended that you do the same. More...

A Resolution You Can Stick To

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/Screen%20Shot%202011-12-12%20at%2012.29.48%20PM.png?itok=ITDqfJNPIf I’m being honest, I’ve never been a big fan of resolutions. Like most people, I have never been able to stick to all the lofty goals I set for myself at the new year. Sure, I’ve diligently written pages of goals in a journal each new year, but there was never any action plan to ensure that I followed through. As I’ve continually failed to accomplish all that I hoped, I’ve begun to wonder why I must wait until the new year to tackle all my imperfections. More...

Part of the joy of the winter break is that it’s a chance to read something longer than twenty pages. I spent part of it reading Cathy O’Neil’s “Weapons of Math Destruction,” which is well worth reading if you haven’t already. More...

Friday Fragments - January 5, 2018

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/confessions_of_a_community_college_dean_blog_header.jpgBy Matt Reed. Calling my colleagues in financial aid offices: the AACC is putting together numbers on student withdrawal dates and the financial impact on colleges if a really regressive version of “risk-sharing” passes.  The short version is, community colleges can’t deny anyone admission, and can’t deny them financial aid, but can be punished financially if students on aid don’t complete a semester. Most of the counties in Kansas are offering to pay off up to 20 percent (or up to $15,000 over five years) of the student debt of new residents who hold college degrees, according to CNBC.
