In Education: U.K. Universities See Rise in Alumni Giving

Subscribe HereDonations to British universities increased 8.5 percent, to $890-million, last year, boosted by new efforts to encourage schools to engage with alumni, the Financial Times writes. The annual Ross-Case report on higher-education philanthropy in Britain found that 204,000 people gave to 150 institutions that were surveyed in the 2010-11 fiscal year, a 10 percent rise from the previous year.
The study credited a three-year, $320-million “matched funding scheme” aimed at promoting alumni relations as a contributing factor in the income gain. Schools that took part in the program backed by the Higher Education Funding Council of England, a public body, boosted donations by 130 percent. The elite universities of Oxford and Cambridge continued to dominate the sector, taking in 44 percent of 2010-11 donations. In other education news, a Rice University alumni has contributed $25-million toward the Houston school’s planned social-sciences building, the Houston Chronicle reports. Read more...

U.K. Higher Education Giving Rises 35% in 5 Years, Study Finds

Subscribe HereA new report says U.K. universities raised more than $1.1-billion in the 2010-11 fiscal year, a 35 percent increase over five years, but could see far greater philanthropic returns by improving student experience, building fundraising programs, and reaching out to alumni, Times Higher Education and Civil Society Media report. The study, commissioned by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, estimated that university giving would top $3.2-billion by 2022 if 5 percent of former students became contributors.

Stephen's Web - Articles

http://www.downes.ca/images/freelearning.gifArticles
Since 1995 I have been posting my articles online. I started because I was worried that my contributions to online forums - such as Hotwired - would disappear. Some are long, others are short. Some of my posts are formal essays, others are responses to an email discussion list. And because I have varied interests, my articles reflect varied interests as well. In one breath I will be talking about web programming, then in another about online learning, then in yet another about global warming or new media. And everything in between. Currently 1,259 articles are listed here. This page lists them in chronological order. There's also a organization by category.

Stephen's Web

pcassuto | 31 décembre, 2012 19:29

http://www.downes.ca/images/freelearning.gifPurpose and Origin
Founded in 1995, Stephen's Web is best described as a digital research laboratory for innovation in the use of online media in education. More than just a site about online learning, it is intended to demonstrate new directions in the field for practitioners and enthusiasts.
Specifically, the design of Stephen's Web is intended to embody the following new directions in online learning:
- Integration of Learning, Practice and Research - it is the author's belief that learning in an online environment will gradually merge with other domains of activity, and specifically, practice and research. Consequently, Stephen's Web merges these three uses of online content into a single space.
- Integration of Content and Community - it is the author's belief that content and community - that is, the presentation of content and consequent discussion of content - should be presented as an integrated unit and not segregated (as is typical in learning management systems). Read more...
