Beginning of the academic year
Institutional autonomy. Almost everywhere the period is between 15 September and 15 October.
Teaching activity and holidays
All periods of teaching activity and holiday are fixed by institutions, which however comply with the following calendar: holidays at the end-of-year festive season (one or often two weeks), as well as in February (generally one week) and April (one or two weeks).
Examinations
Examination periods are entirely at the discretion of university managing bodies.
End of the academic year
No precise date. Institutional autonomy. In practice, the academic year ends after the final examination, in June or at the beginning of July.
Public holidays (occasional/national/religious holidays)
The following dates are regarded as public holidays by all institutions:

En cette période de rentrée universitaire, Najat Vallaud-Belkacem et Thierry Mandon tiennent à rappeler que les étudiants en recherche de logement mais ne disposant pas de garant peuvent bénéficier du dispositif de "caution locative étudiante" (Clé).
La caution locative étudiante (Clé) est une garantie de l'Etat, gérée par les CROUS, qui permet aux étudiants disposant de revenus mais dépourvus de garants personnels d’accéder plus facilement à un logement. La loi interdit toute distinction ou traitement inégal en raison de 20 critères :

| Handicap | On me refuse la participation aux activités de mon école parce que je suis handicapé. |
| Caractéristiques génétiques | On m’a refusé la souscription d’un contrat d’assurance car j’ai une pathologie héréditaire. |
| Mœurs | On m’a refusé un emploi parce que je suis fumeur. |
| Orientation sexuelle | On a refusé de me louer un appartement car je suis une femme homosexuelle en couple. |
| Identité sexuelle | Je suis une femme transgenre et victime de moqueries quotidiennes de la part de mes collègues depuis que je leur ai demandé de m’appeler par le prénom féminin que j’ai choisi. |
| Age | On m’a refusé un crédit immobilier en raison de mon âge. |
| Opinions politiques | On m’a refusé une promotion en raison de mon engagement politique. |
| Activités syndicales | Ma carrière n’a pas connu d’évolution depuis que je me suis présenté comme délégué du personnel. |
| Appartenance ou non-appartenance, vraie ou supposée, à une ethnie, à race, à une religion | Le maire refuse mon inscription à l’école parce que je suis rom. |
| Appartenance ou non-appartenance, vraie ou supposée, à une nation | Les employés de nationalité française occupant un emploi similaire ont une rémunération meilleure que la mienne. |
Quelles sont les inégalités de traitement concernées ?
Le Défenseur des droits peut intervenir dans de nombreux cas de discrimination, notamment en matière :
