Canadian colleges, universities pump out half a million grads, up 4%

Statistics Canada says the country’s post-secondary institutions saw more people both enrolling and graduating during the 2013-14 school year.
The federal agency says enrolments climbed 1.2 per cent over 2012 levels as more than two million students began classes at a public college or university. More...

CIHR cancels funding program that helped bring science discoveries to market

Saint Mary's University offers basic Arabic course for the public

Halifax's Saint Mary's University is offering a beginner conversational Arabic course for the public starting in January, in time for the arrival of Syrian refugees.
Teacher Muhammad Elhabibi says he hopes Nova Scotians might be willing to learn Arabic, a language common to many students and families who arrive here unable to speak English. More...

NSCAD approves 27% tuition increase for full-time students

NSCAD's board of governors voted to increase tuition on Tuesday, but only for some full-time students.
The Halifax university will increase tuition by about 27 per cent over three years for students taking five classes or more per semester. More...

Only 1 in 5 Canadians with PhDs land a tenure-track job in their field

Eighty Arabic-speaking students and staff at University of Moncton responded to a call for interpreters to help with settling incoming refugee families.

Making people uncomfortable is education’s job

By Rick MacLean. “Oh no,” he asked. “Did I get fired?”
I smiled.
“You did,” I said as I reached for the Sharpie fine point marker with the red ink I reserve for such special occasions.
“FIRED,” I wrote on the story the student had, no doubt, worked on so industriously.
His crime? He’d spelled a name wrong. In my business, a reporter who gets a name wrong doesn’t have much of a future punching computer keys. If you get the name wrong, what else is wrong in your story?
