EUA launches European-wide debate on university autonomy

In a statement issued from Bergen yesterday, EUA members called on the Hungarian president to block legislation targeting the Central European University, a long-standing EUA member. On 4 April 2017, the Hungarian Parliament adopted an amendment to the country’s Education Law that, if signed by the president, will make further operations of CEU in Hungary almost impossible. UK triggers Brexit, EUA advocates for continued university collaboration

EUA has been following the potential impact of Brexit on European higher education and research since the months leading up to the July 2016 referendum. The Association’s position is clear: EUA will work for the closest possible cooperation between EU and UK universities after Brexit, preferably through formal association of the UK to the research Framework Programmes and Erasmus+. EUA calls on governments to refrain from interference in university autonomy

Growing infringements to these core academic values indicate a lack of trust in universities and the critical role they play in society. The latest example concerns the Hungarian government’s proposal to amend national legislation (passed on 4 April, see EUA’s reaction) with a view to targeting one specific higher education institution, the Central European University in Budapest, a long-standing EUA member.
