It is curious, and depressing, that in the 32 pages of the arbitrator’s award on the dismissal of Denis Rancourt, there is no discussion of the role final course grades play in education. When administrators are quoted on the value of final grades, they talk about their usefulness to graduate schools and employers, not about their value in teaching or learning.
Rancourt was a professor of physics at the University of Ottawa until March 2009, when the university formally dismissed him. Rancourt grieved that dismissal through his union. C’est ce que révèle l’étude sur les ruptures de contrats d'apprentissage en Aquitaine menée par l’Observatoire de l’Alternance, porté dans sa partie technique par Aquitaine Cap Métiers.

Cette étude qualitative réalisée par le Céreq (Centre d’études et de recherches sur les qualifications) a pour objectif d’identifier les marges de progrès et les freins au développement de l’apprentissage. Les enquêtes de terrain ont été conduites de façon anonyme dans trois régions auprès des principaux intervenants locaux. Adopté par le Conseil des ministres du 22 janvier, le projet de loi relatif à la formation professionnelle, à l’emploi et à la démocratie sociale est en cours de discussion à l’Assemblée nationale depuis le 5 février et sera examiné au Sénat à partir du 18 février.
